CZ550Kevlar
If memory serves a Mauser .270 is going to cost you the best part or £1600 - £1700 new for the bare rifle, mauser actions are very nice which is where they stand out, however for the same calibre i personally went the route of Tikka T3, lovely action and a nice weight stalking rifle, never had any problems with it and a highly rated rifle, Sako will be the same range as your are looking at about £1000. warren
my dad was thinking of getting a 243 why did you go for the 270 is it a better all round size round. We will be going upto scotland this year but most of his shooting will be munkjack and small dear what do you think ? al4x
1st tip would be look elsewhere rather than your local gunshop, and thats definitely dear stalking you're looking at, you can get a decent set up for far less than that, obviously calibre will depend if you're after big reds as most things will knock muntjacks down
CZ550Kevlar
For Muntjac and small deer .243 will do you fine, i went for .270 for that bit extra punch compared to the .243 i found the .270 was more flexible allowing me to go for good clean kills on both smaller and larger deer depening on the grain bullet i was using, some will probably say different but mine was preference on what felt right to me. Even in .243 a sako or Tikka are fine rifles you will find them very popular with stalkers.
flytie
The MO3 Mauser is a takedown rifle, allowing you to exchange barrel and calibre but keep the same trigger unit and stock. Comparable, but not necessarily better, are the Sauer 202 and the Blaser R93. If your dad just wants one rifle, but possibly more calibres in the future then it is not a bad way to go. They are more expensive than single calibre rifles, but are quality items. It would therefore allow your dad to have a red deer capable calibre and something smaller for munties but only one rifle. If money is no object any of the above would more than do the trick. http://www.mauserwaffen.de/M-03-Basic.142.0.html?&L=1 As for calibre, buy whatever you really like, a .243 will take red stags. It has been more than proven! It is however not to everyones taste. Any calibre from .222 to 30-06 will take munties, and if the correct bullet/load is used, it will not be blown to pieces. For an all purpose round, i do not think you can better the 6.5x55 or the 7mm-08 Failing that, buy a Sako in 6.5x55, you know it makes sense:yes: Have a look at what's available on http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/ ft
warren
so do you think it would be worth geting a bigger caliber and just change the load to suit the deer that he goes after. Also what scope would you go for they seem to go from £50-£1500 what one would you go for and why please
Beardo
a good European fixed scope will be perfect for stalking 8 x 56, Zeiss, Swarovski or Schmidt & Bender Edited February 10, 2010 by nickbeardo
warren
thx for all your help its been very helpful, what shops do you lot go to for your rifles ?
maddog546
Warren another point to remember is that the Mauser ,Tikkas have stand alone mounts and therefore are an extra expense,as for calibre its down to preference and it would pay for your father to try a few to see what he likes as his stature will also come into effect. I use the 270 for Deer and fox but most people use 243's because the prefer it as its softer shooting as some people chose the 308,but your father is the one to make that choice, weight of weapon also comes into the equation so there is no definative answer. As for scope you need to spend equal to or more than you did on the rifle, remember you are shooting a large powerful beast and bullet placement is key, withot good glass you cant do this. warren
Are there any gun clube, shops that you can try the different calibers as we have only used shotguns all this rifle lark seems far to complicated for my liking give me a 687 and a field full of pigeons any day.I think from what i have read and been told that he needs to find some one who is into stalking so they can answer all of never ending questions as every time i tell him somthink i get a why and what if old people dont they drive you mad
