Cheap, light centrefire moderator

When I bought my steyr .223 I got a T8 but found the gun far too front heavy as most of my shooting is done on foot, for the last few years I have shot without a mod but have found its starting to damage my hearing-I take ear plugs or defenders but don't like wearing them all the time and then when a shot presents itself I generally take it rather than protecting myself

So I have been on the lookout for a moderator that is light, not too bulky and due to another blanco seed being sown cheap

Nick (Gully on here) recommended I go to country-pursuits to see a moderator they make, I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship and finish and the fact it was half the price of most others so bought it immediately but won't be able to test it until Saturday.

Its 140mm(5.5") long and 39mm wide which is 2mm wider and the same length as a SAK rimfire mod and weighs a mere 275g, made from aluminium with stainless baffles there won't be any corrosion issues and if anything is damaged/burnt out then spares are available.

I will put some rounds through it on Saturday and maybe try a side by side with a T8, Whilst I don't expect it to be amazing due to low volume I'm not that bothered as long as it tames the bang enough to stop my ears ringing and doesn't break my spine when carrying it around.

I will let you know how I get on at the weekend.

i've heard good things about Trevors moderators, a guy a shoot with occasionally has a .17hmr one that he swears by - had a quick look last time i was in there and was surprised to see felt wads inside them, Trevor wasn't there so don't know if this is RF or CF ones - would have though it would burn? Does yours have felt in?

Nope, its just in the rimfire ones although they have tested felt in the centrefires but it was a failure

The other weird thing was the rimfrie mod was insanely heavy-at least twice the weight of the compact that I have ???

Trever seemed like a top bloke and I would have stayed and chatted longer if there wasn't a gralloched munty bleeding in my car.

I've seen, heard and used these, on the face of it they do seem well made and a good price, yes they do reduce the sound a bit!

Difficult to put into perspective but on the results I have achieved, I AM prepared to pay double the money for a better one!

Shame really, as they do seem to to have a lot going for them, but the reality does not always meet the expectation!!

:good:

Well I took it out this morning whilst dumping a deer carcass and put a couple of rounds through it, Decker's comment had left me thinking that I had maybe just bought another ornament for the end of my rifle that was going to end up in the cabinet.

I have to say that it far outweighed my expectations and really is perfect for my needs, it has a stronger report than my old T8 but was at a completely comfortable level to shoot without ear protection. I would put it at about the noise of an un-modded pcp air rifle but less sharp, the BANG had gone and you could hear the sonic crack again.

I would expect at 100yds away there would be little difference if compared to other "better" mods and from the shooters point of view I am happy that it is safe to use with no ear protection, the price and weight gains added to the fact that the two 75yds testers hit a tight 1/2" high means it has not altered the POI even on my skinny barrelled steyr make me think its a winner :good:

I am not sure how it would perform with a 22-250 as there is a lot more gas to deal with but for the .222, hornet and my .223 I think it is perfect.

I will try and do a side by side with a mates T8 unless someone in north Essex, Herts or south Cambs wants to compare?

Good to hear, it looks the same as I can recall but perhaps things have improved..it was always a competative price, which was what bought me to it to start with...how much is it now as a matter of interest!!

It was £125 but I think he might be putting them up a bit so anyone interested should really ring and find out.

Deckers, what calibre did you try it on?

It was a while back and I think it was the .223, but may just have been the .243 <_< ...I must be getting old.... it came and went very quickly!!!

There is a slightly larger one for anything bigger than the .22CF's and I guess if that was used with the smaller rounds it wouldn't be as good due to the hole size, they might have even modified it although it is basically a stainless dished baffle stack with an expansion chamber at the front.

As I said its not as quiet as the bigger mods but I am happy with the level of reduction from the shooters perspective, I have also stood down range from an un-modded .223 behind several hundred tons of logs at night and the sonic crack was louder than the bang although I was near the path of the bullet. Its a scary experience and makes you think about what its like for our forces under fire.

It was a 243 mod, and on 243 I still wanted muffs. On 223 it wasn't great, T8 better for sound reduction.

However, if I had got the 5/8 thread for my old Remington, it would have been light enough to make that rifle carryable, so there is something going for it. Similar trade off on my 308 which has a pes muzzle can - very light but carp for sound moderation (fine for the odd deer, not fine for zeroing)

Just seen this. My 'Trevor Special' is on my 6.5x55, and I also have a dB meter if anyone does want to do some comparing? I don't have the land either though at the moment otherwise I'd offer.

I will speak to a friend in Hatfield and see if he has suitible land down there, a DB meter would be cool to test rimfire mods with too.
