mattc83
hi guys as url probably see from my earlier topics i have been training my 9 month old ess for the last 4 months. for the first 2 months he was an absolute nightmare outside and brilliant inside. he has come on leaps and bounds but every so often ****s up and i have to start again. the only way i can get him to do what i want him to do is with treats. if i do not take any treats out with me he'' ****** off and hunt on his own. i was getting very stressed an thought a couple of times of getting rid of him. but iv stuck with it and seem to be back on the right road again, for now! as soon as he knows he gettin somethin from me his **** in on the floor like a shot and he realls instantly. i dont know whether its just how he'll be and i will never be able to work him or if he is just really immature. has anyone come across a similar problem with their pup or know of any ways i can sort this problem out? iv used the pinned treat training on her but it didnt work. cheers matt
al4x
its the age old problem and simply stick with it, makes you want to tear your hair out but it does get better. Springers want to work hard and hunt everything they can, If he recalls with treats don't complain as thats quite good! 9 months is still very early days don't give in it will get better
WGD
She's only 9 months, she'll be about ready to START training now. Set the dog up to suceed, don't give it the opportunity to cock up, keep calm and keep the sessions short and successful, it will come together. mattc83
thanks guys i never new how stressful training a gundog would be. maybe i was being a bit naive thinking it was a walk in the park, how wrong was i. half my problem is that i do everything that 100mph but have learnt the hard way that with this its not good. dont worry ill stick at it, iv got another year before he should be ready. fingers crossed he'll calm down in the next couple of months thanks again matt
al4x
get onto steadyness training and don't expect too much, just remember if you wanted an easy dog you wouldn't have got a springer. They make lovely working dogs but my 2 year old GWP is steadier than my mates 10 year old springer
Game Shooter
hi guys as url probably see from my earlier topics i have been training my 9 month old ess for the last 4 months. for the first 2 months he was an absolute nightmare outside and brilliant inside. he has come on leaps and bounds but every so often ****s up and i have to start again. the only way i can get him to do what i want him to do is with treats. if i do not take any treats out with me he'' ****** off and hunt on his own. i was getting very stressed an thought a couple of times of getting rid of him. but iv stuck with it and seem to be back on the right road again, for now! as soon as he knows he gettin somethin from me his **** in on the floor like a shot and he realls instantly. i dont know whether its just how he'll be and i will never be able to work him or if he is just really immature. has anyone come across a similar problem with their pup or know of any ways i can sort this problem out? iv used the pinned treat training on her but it didnt work. cheers matt i've been training my 3rd Gundog now for about 6 months and he still ****s up occassionally, your biggest problem is the use of treats, your ess, like mine, should come back because he wants to, try quartering with him, criss crossing your movements with his, and using your whistle (3 pips) and keep recalling him and sitting him (1 pip) everytime he does this right make a fuss out of him, stroke him and tell him he's a good boy, concrentrate on 1 thing at a time, then move on. try the use of a rope for recall training, attach the rope like you would a slip lead and let him go off to the full extent of it then 3 pips on the whistle and call his name softly, if he doesn't come back yank the rope very hard to pull him off balance and call him again, he will come then because he won't like being pulled, keep doing this untill sooner or later he recalls every time. garyb
your biggest problem is the use of treats, your ess, like mine, should come back because he wants to I don't agree... Watch any of the Howard Kirby videos, He's quite probably one of the best spaniel men about - and you'll notice he treat trains, and even with a clicker. Dog's learn by association - associate commands with good things, I train mine to recall to small bits of cheese (something they would die for, rather than boring kibble) try the use of a rope for recall training, attach the rope like you would a slip lead and let him go off to the full extent of it then 3 pips on the whistle and call his name softly, if he doesn't come back yank the rope very hard to pull him off balance and call him again, he will come then because he won't like being pulled, keep doing this untill sooner or later he recalls every time Again I don't agree! A dog of that age, shouldn't be forced into a game of tug of war... you will make him fearful of any future lead work. How can you expect a good recall when he associates it with a rope round his neck? Where did you read this tosh ? Softly softly is the only way See - http://horseandcountry.tv/episode/hc-how-t...kirby-episode-1 Edited March 9, 2010 by garyb
garyb
Matt The dog is very young. I wouldn't do any more than basic Sit, Stay, Recall and walking to heal until he's at least 10 months if not more. Forget about retrieving for now, you'll have enough to keep you busy. Skimp on the basics early in his training life, and it will take years to correct. Go to amazon and buy a book called "Training Spaniels" by Joe Irving. mattc83
thanks gary for the last week iv been mainly doing the basic training. tho i have been using a couple of retrieves just to burn off some energy and keep him interested in the dummies. i have noticed that when he wants to he'll be spot on and walk to heal sit stay etc. however like this evening there was something hanging around a tree that kept his interest and played up a lot. i'll carry on sticking with the basics for now as its not getting me stressed and im back to enjoying the training again. my friends cocker pup is the same age, i admire him, i will try not to big him up too much as his head will explode but his pup is absolutley **** hot!!! (i sure he'll be reading this). makes my dog look like an idiot!i hope to one day get my boy like his. i understand the importance of recall and stay, if i cant get him to do these basic commands i'll end up having a seriously injured or even a dead dog one day. i appreciate all ya input i'll take it all in and keep at it matt
