Which rifle calibre?

I'm thinking of applying for a section 1 license this year. I'm looking for a rifle that will deal with rabbits and small vermin, but will also cope with foxes as my land is upland sheep country and I need to keep the farmers happy.

Also wondered if I'm likely to be allowed a moderator straight away?

Any advice on calibres etc gratefully received.

Thanks

I am just going through the application process and the FEO told me that .22WMR is treated as suitable for Fox,in Cheshire anyway. It will depend on what they will grant you for both fox and vermin in your area but the WMR was developed as a varmint calibre I read and is available as a semi auto. A few off here say it is a good ,if shortish range fox calibre. I have not heard anyone be turned down for a moderator but someone more experienced may know different.

As above it is worth a search on here.

If you want to eat what you shoot then both the .22lr and .17hmr will be great for the smaller species and will take a Fox at close range. If you're not bothered about eating the Rabbits and aren't shooting hundreds of them then a .22 hornet (if you don't mind home loading) or .223 would be my choice.

When you mention upland shooting I assume you're talking big wide open spaces and the shots will be taken at range? If so a small centrefire would be my choice. :o

As said above, a search and you'll be able to confuse yourself at you leisure...

I can't use anything but a centrefire for fox, so I have .17hmr for small ground vermin and have just got a variation for .204 ruger for fox, which I'm hoping will also kill a rabbit.

Check with your local plod, some areas allow hmr/wmr for fox, and if your area does..well, two birds with one stone mate.
