andrewjames
i currently own an fx 2000 with a redfield scope 4-16x44 that came with it... looking to upgrade the scope to the best quality i can afford. ive been looking at leupold but the quality possibly out weighs the rifles quality :o looking for some suggestions, what would be a suitable brand and focal length scope to go for? rifle is 11.6ftlb (and with a price range of around 240.00) is leupold really to good for an fx2000? sometimes i think its worth getting due to its quality. whats to stop me upgrading my rifle in the future? thanks in advance guys. John_R
Is this for hunting purposes or for FT/ HFT? IMO if it is for hunting then you really don't need to go anywhere near that high a budget.
andrewjames
ultimately id have to say hunting, however i do love plinking at long ranges and with great accuracy... what would be the top end price for hunting scopes... is there a compromise between the two (hunting and competition standard scopes)
ostrea
I have a AGS SWAT 3-12 x 44 Mill Do Scope on my hw100 kt paid £200. a few weeks ago in my local gun shop but they are on offer over the net for£139.00 I find it an excellent scope for target and hunting. I find the parallax adjustment handy mounted on the side and also the mill dot is ideal as i have Zeroed the gun at 30m and just use the dots for aiming at closer or longer targets it has has eleven shades of illumination for varying light conditions. bullet boy
MTC Viper or the new Hawke Tactical range of scopes.
andrewjames
whats to be said about the MTC SCB reticule offered by the viper... i had my heart set on mil dot and the hawke does supply that. i get the impression they do exactly the same thing, except the mil dots dont clutter the view up... can anyone tell me otherwise? the viper does seem to be getting some very good reviews. John_R
I have both 4-16 Viper and 3-12 Mamba, tried both on my .177 Daystate. I do like the SCB, it is busy but does not get in the way, and offers far more aimpoints than mildot as the half-dots are accounted for and a .75 near the middle. The Viper might do your requirement actually as it is not an all-out FT scope by any stretch of the imagination but does offer more than you need for purely hunting. I started with the 4-16 Viper and changed to the Mamba as frankly the Viper was too much for a hunting rifle. The turrets and large sidewheel are bulky and I felt it added too much weight. I am not interested in any target disciplines at all except for practice and zero sessions. I might even sell the Viper, I was hanging on in case I put another rig together but my thoughts are leaning elsewhere... :o
andrewjames
im definatly interested in the viper now after spending pretty much the whole day researching it. my problem now lies between the different focal lengths and parallax theroy. i could get the fixed 10x focal length or go for the same 4-16 viper you have (john_r) however, i have read today that the higher the focal length you go the more issues one has with parallax. if you was considering selling the 4-16 viper much would you be looking for. and another thing, i have a redfield scope "4-16x44" on the fx right now thats guna be no use to me very soon. how much is it worth? i cant see anywhere online that sells it and it seems to bring up alot of american pages. thanks for the contribution so far, its been very helpful to me guys. andy. kyska
Is this for hunting purposes or for FT/ HFT? IMO if it is for hunting then you really don't need to go anywhere near that high a budget. I'd still buy the best you can afford, I've made that mistake for years, buy a scope for life, it can always be put on a FAC rifle.
andrewjames
what would you recomend kyska? initially i was thinking a hawke sidewinder ir 30 but ive read some reviews on the build quality of these scopes... i just dont know if they are worth the amount they cost. in your opinion whats better then a viper within my budget. Is the scope for hunting? If its for HFT etc I can't advise I'm afraid. If its hunting, maybe consider a second hand high quality fixed lens SB, Miopter, Zeiss, Doctor. (you may have to stretch a bit more financially) I only give this advise as a rimfire shooter, but if you intend to get an FAC buy good now to save money later. andrewjames
its primarily for hunting, however i would like the option of some long range target shooting aswell, i am by no means a professional or even someone who enters competitions... i am however interested in investing properly and getting decent kit that will live a long and well used life time. i would agree on the fixed focal length, it seems that people get a better result when shooting targets and to be honest i dont usually use the zoom feature of my red field scope i currently own. not sure if thats any help to you but if i could find a compromise between the two hunting and a HFT style scope id be laughing. the search continues. John_R
Basically, a precision target scope is one thing, and a hunting scope is another. You would probably find a scope designed for HFT would also do well for hunting. As for my Viper, if I do sell it I'll want £165. It is as new, with every accessory you get with a new one. tweedledee
surely leupolds and the like are parallaxed more towards the rimfire shooter at 100 yards??? sounds overkill to me. hawke and bushnell would be more than ample for air rifle ranges
andrewjames
yeah it is a little overkill, but the whole point is to find some top kit that will suffice with any future investments/upgrades. il have a look at all the brands kyska mentioned thanks for the support. bullet boy
You'll love the SCB ret on the Viper trust me.I had a 4-16x50 scope, now my Dad has it on his Rimfire. He says it's the best value for money scope he has ever seen!
