Nissan_Man
Hi, This is my first post on here! Quick question, I look after most the pest control at my place of work and I've been asked to reduce the fox population by at least half. Thing is, my normal quarry is mainly squirrels, rabbits and pest birds like woodies. So, I'm a touch unsure as to the right cartridge for the job. I have a 12g mossberg 500 ( with hushpower + 28" barrel) and I was wondering if I could use Gamebore buffalo 42g no.3's. I would probably have the hushpower barrel on the gun when I'm in a position to take a shot but will these have enough punch to cleanly kill a fox at say up to ~35 meters? From my searches I see that most people recommend at least 36g BB or no.1. Should I perhaps look at something like Eley 2 3/4" 42g No.1 / BB instead? SSS
Number 3's will do it mate, and if you want my opinion, pattern kills. Size isn't everything (or so I keep telling myself) I have shot foxes with 6's and it does the job. Good luck All the best, SSS

utectok
I use 50gm 3" mags in 1 but any cart from bb-3 is ok even 6s at 20 yds. That's my bit anyway!
radio1ham
with the prices of cartridges with bigger shot in them getting to be stupid prices like £10+ for a box of 25 AAA`s and sg`s ive started making my own which have 9 lead balls in them which will do for charlie
Nissan_Man
Thanks for the replies. I think I try a box of the Gamebore no.3's and see how I get on.

If you've got the land, why not just put in for a centrefire rifle? You will not be able to make a serious dent in any fox population with just a shotgun. Some foxes are just too shy and wont come more than 50 yards in.

Honestly, the majority of the work I do on the land doesn't require the need for a centrefire rifle. Although, I agree, it would make a big difference. My sensible hat thinks it would be a significant investment for something I'll have very little use for long term.
