.243 for Deer question.

Recommended Posts

Ok, without going into too much detail can anyone tell me if there are any guidelines / legal requirements that the FEO has to follow when issuing authorisation for a .243 for Deer Shooting/Stalking?

What I am talking about is the amount of acrage of permission you require or the amount of deer on that/those permission(s) for him to say that there is or is not sufficient justification for issuing me with authorisation for a .243 with Deer as the quarry? Also can the FEO say/suggest that you should get your DSC1 before you get a .243 issued on your FAC?

This is all of course on the assumption that the land is passed as suitable for a .243!

Not sure if there is an acreage issue, but if its too small some FEOs will make a sound about the size for sure. The mother in laws place is about 50 acres, and i have shot it for about 13 years with the .243.My local FEO,who is luckily blessed with common sense and fairness, phoned me to ask if it would be suitable for a 308,as a friend of the MIL(F) :hmm: ,was going to try for a roe on it.I said there was not a need, but that if its suitable for the .243 then theres no probs for the 308 and he agreed. On the second point,i have heard some forces are trying to push the level 1 before you get approved for deer.I dont think from a legal stand they can make that stick and its time they were told to stick to the laws and not make up ****.

Frenchie...i spoke to the FEO down here last year on this, he did say that 'they' like to see you going down the DSC1 route [unless there is some other experience/qualification that is relevant - i expect]. I have heard of people with small area's of land getting it agreed by suggesting the use of highseats to enable a better angle and therefore a safer backstop...

if you are going for it put it down for fox/deer, that way you will/should get it but there may be a DSC1/mentoring condition put on for deer - at least you can go out and practice/get used to the rifle on the foxes whilst you get the deer conditions sorted.

i dont think there would be a 'number of deer on the land' issue as most deer move about, so there is a good chance that deer will pass over your land, especially up where you are!

if you get it and need a deer dragger let me know!!!!

ATB and good luck...keep us informed
