pbickerd
Hi Guys, How bad would it be to shoot skeet and compact sporting with a 24 inch barrelled Semi Auto (Benelli m2)? If I remember correctly, because of the way semi's work a 24 inch semi auto would be equiv to a 26 inch O/U? Cant remember the reasoning for it but i remember someone telling me. There arent any particularly long shots but would it still be really bad? If I used half choke and 7.5 shot would that help? I'm thinking this would give me a better chance on the longer shots as the should would not be spread so wide. Oh, and the reason I want to do this is that it will double up as a practical shotgun gun at a later date. -Paul
Paul223
As far as I'm aware barrel length is more about gun balance and may be weight to maintain swing than being able to shoot at distance, the semi is longer because the action makes up a few inches before the chamber. There might be a slight increase in the speed of the shot leaving the barrel by a few feet per second in the longer barrel, but not much, and the shot starts to spread in the same way on exiting whether it's 24 or 32 inches long (all things being equal regarding choke size), so no real down range issues as I see it
Dougy
Now please dont take this the wrong way, I am buy no means an expert in clay shooting, but i cannot see a semi cut down to 24" joining the local skeet team and then for use on the odd compact, and by someone who also wants the shotgun for practicle use. it would turn a few heads. and you may end up shooting on your own 24" would be very good on the skeet No9 shot But its normally shot using O/U. I would leave the benelli alone and get a cheap semi for practicle and butcher that (2nd hand escort )

I was going to buy one with a 24 inch barrell out of the box They are popular with PSG shooters so its not hard to find them on sale with 24. I am not planning on shooting competitively, I just shoot clays occasionally for fun and practice. I had to sell all my guns a while back but I'm getting back into it now and I'm trying to consolidate a bit rather than have a gun for every purpose. I know some people will probably frown at it a bit. EDIT - Do you think such a short barell would be useable on the sporting? -Paul Edited March 31, 2010 by pbickerd
goldypurple
at the end of the day if your on them you will break them with what ever gun your using and with what ever choke your using
MK38
Some years ago i used to shoot a couple of local sporting clay shoots, and one of the guys i saw there allways used a 26" skeet gun... didn't seem to limit him to much,he scored fairly well........ but having said that , none of the targets were at any great distance. Afterall their is only a small difference between skeet and 1/4 chokes , and they are used quite effectively at sporting targets... might be a bit of a problem on long edge on targets but otherwise i can't see any real reason why not. On the shoots i go to now, i would feel fairly happy with a skeet gun..... i'm sure i'd miss just as many, and i doubt it would be the guns fault ! Slug
I shoot practical with a 24" supernova and a 26" M2, I use the M2 for skeet with skeet chokes and 9's I hit more than I did with the 686, the M2 is so light, and with Crio chokes makes a good pattern, if your on them your on them simples !
