cowboy1403
Hi all. had my FEO visit today for my FAC put in for .22 .17 and a .223 all with mods. prempting his visit i new i would need bigget cabinet but the cupboard i have my cabinet for my shotguns is resticted by width, but is full room height and 4foot wide, but has the door in the middle of it. after searching around for a bit and not finding anything suited for the task i decided i would research what would be involved in turning the cupboard into a gun room. i came up with this welded 25x25x3mm box steel door frame bolted through the wooden door lining into surrounding brickwork. two doors with welded hinges onto the door frame and door which are also made of 25x25x3mm box steel and a outer skin off 2mm steel plate. the smaller door which was to form the ammunition storage area has a 7 lever lock that is anti drill and saw.the bigger door has two 5 lever locks that are anti drill and saw. the shelve that seperates the 2 compartments has a frame of 50x50mm angle iron fixed to brickwork on all sides.this has a 50x50x2mm steel mesh welded to it. the wooden cupboard door is still in place so it still looks just like a cupboard. now the FEO has had a look today and has said that because of the amount of guns because the mods count as guns i need an alarm system fitted.i dont think this is unfair so i said i would do. but he has asked for another gun cabinet aswell even after i said i would store the rifles in the existing cabinet and just keep shotguns in the room part. do you thimk the FEO is being a little unfair and do you think i should press the issue and see if we can come to a compromise of some sort. Beardo
i think that's grossly unfair - i've got exactly the same amount of FAC stuff as you and never had a problem. are you a BASC member? if so then give them a call.
al4x
they can take into account local crime rates when deciding these things, but they are talking bull about the mods counting as firearms for this.
Paddy Galore!
sounds like a lot of waffle to me, i know people with guns in glass fronted cabinets with nothing more than a 5 lever lock on the door to the room. Admittedly the house is alarmed, but one good kick and the door would easily give way, the place is in the middle of nowhere too, so it'd be a while before the police got there. jackinbox99
So from what your saying, the FEO is basically saying the gunroom you have built is no more secure than a normal cupboard, if he is wanting you to fit an additional gun safe to ensure all guns are in "off the shelf" gun safes??!?! Ive heard about FEO`s "recommending" alarms before for people who have a very large amount of guns (12 or more) but even thats only a "recommendation" rather than a condition of them issuing an FAC. All seems very strange to me. But one thing I know is that each area is different and each FEO has their own personal opinions which they tend to try and enforce as law. Id speak to the BASC for some legal advice, but personally i dont think you`ll get anywhere as police forces can be very stubborn and it may just not be worth the hassle of objecting. cowboy1403
i have lived in my house for 6 years and in that time i know of no-one that has had thier house broken into or even a car nicked.so i would say that the area has a low crime rate.we have just had new multi point locking windows and doors so with the alarm i would say we are as safe as could be expected.
