I believe Rosson became a Gallyon long ago and Galloyns still operate in Norfolk.

There was a range of Box and Sidelocks, and those I have seen were quality items ....

You could always contact them?

I thought I saw one (restored) at Elderkins of Spalding ... always worth a call as Bill Elderkin specialises in bringing older guns back into their glory.

Thanks for the info. I will contact Gallyon and sons now. Do you know roughly what years they operated between? The one I have been offered looks quite old, the blueing looks a little thin on the barrels but the action is good and the barrel is in good condition where it matters, inside. The wood is tired but thats an easy job to sort. It's a boxlock ejector, all for under £100!!

I thought that Charles Rosson was based in Derby. If you check out this photo you can just about make out 'Derby and Norwich' on the label....

There are references to C Rosson and C S Rosson. They look to be really nice English guns.

I think there seem to be a few different Rossons. You are right, there is one in Derby, the one I am interested in is Norwich and there are Dobson and Rosson who might be different people again!

As I understand it the original Rosson was born in Birmingham around 1840's and was listed as a Birmingham gunmaker. At some stage he set up business in Derby. Charles Rosson of Derby bought a shopin Norwich and set up his elder son, Charles Stanley Rosson up there, and his younger son Percy James carried on with the Derby shop. It seems that at some time shortly following the death of Charles Snr. there was a disagreement between the two brothers and from then on each would deny the existance of the other and would always insist that there was no relationship between the two Rosssons.

The C S Rosson company merged with Hellis of London in 1953. At that time C S Rosson were based in Norwich. The Derby business went a few years before that.
