docholiday
Went down to Devon to a permission that I have with a group this friday, took nearly four hours in the traffic to do 80 miles so a bit lethargic when I arrived, parked the car up and got my gear together, had a short walk of 300yds through some scrub ground to get to the estate, walked carefully down to the gate getting the stiffnes out of my legs enjoying the late afternoon sunshine, crept the last bit to the gate and peered into the first field nothing to my right but turning to my left was a small buck just 40 feet away, wind was in my favour, so thought of best way of getting my gun mounted with him being so close, decieded my sticks might make to much noise and he might see my movement so got the rifle onto the gate but realised the gate was not secure and I could end up moving it and causing more noise. withj that the buck started to saunter towrds me, trying not to make any noise and standing rigid I prayed he would turn. eventually he started grazing and came sideways on.I didnt need a second invitation and down he went. He was so close (and small) the shot lifted him in the air and he was dead before he landed. He was gralloched and back in the car within half an hour of me arriving. I wandered around the four fields at this part of the estate but saw nothing else so drove a mile to a different location, when I got onto the land found they had been spreading muck and with no rain it was unlikely that the deer would use these fields, I went down to one of the high seats after a walk around, just as I got to the corner of the field I saw a really good buck in hard antler but despite a carefull stalk across a whole field he didnt hang around, sat up in the highseat for the last hour but nothing else showed up. cup of coffe at the car as it was cold at 9.00pm, down to the chippy and a much quicker journey home. Thanks for reading doc Edited April 25, 2010 by docholiday
