how would you go about starting a new syndicate for pheasants shooting.?

Get a group of like minded people together and then find some suitable land to rent the rights on.

How long is a piece of string? I used to be in a syndicate that had 650 acres for £1250 a year. All depends on how much woodland there is, if its flat or hilly, if there are ponds etc etc.

 

Then you need birds at about £3 a poult and feed and medication and a few release pens to build and all the hoppers to buy or make and then to work out a rota for feeding and work days to make everything.

There are several good books about that will give you a good idea of costings and advice on starting a syndicate, one is called Running your own shoot by David Hudson which is i have found very informative in the past . You could always think about getting a team of guns together and buy days at different shooting venues. This takes alot of the time and hassle out it, you can let someone elase worry about the day then.

If this is new woods with nothing set up already -

 

Start with rent. Difficult to price, based on woods, land shape and location (which is key where I live). Average £2 - £3 acre. Good £5+

 

Then add up cost of poults and feed (work on about £15 a bird all in).

 

Say for 350 birds put down, it will cost you an additional £1.5k (2 pens put up, 2 electric fence units, electric fences, drinkers, feeders and parts (say 30), shelters in the pens and all the bits and bobs to go with them. You will need to make this investment personally and claw back over say 5 years. Most people will not pay up front for these things and will see the shooting as to expensive.

 

Guns work days - from a fresh say 8 - 10 days graft, after the set up 2 - 3 depending on what needs doing. Again a pain in the XXXX. "Cant come today cos my cousins hamster died 2 weeks ago." Work on man hours not length of days.

 

Don't even ask about time, petrol costs and sleepless night (but the stella does help until 4.30 am).

 

Is it worth while, god damn right it is!!!
