garyb
One for Apache After worming my Springer yesterday with Milbemax, I noticed today a single live roundworm in his business. Do I need to do anything further? like more worming tablets etc? Dog is fit and healthy, and I've not noticed a problem before today. Cheers GB
apache
I'm here! Nowt to worry about, the Milbemax paralyses the worm so it loses its attachment to the gun wall - the wormer doesn't actually kill the worm. This way they are able to pass out, seemingly alive. Fear not, the wormer has done it's job. :o
garyb
Didn't notice any this morning in his stool... I take it there is probably more than just the one inside of him ? Shall I reworm again in a month ?
apache
'average' dog needs doing every 3 months, more often if they have a risky lifestyle. My own dog does eat things she shouldn't etc so I do her every 2 months. One month seems a little soon. Some worms can be digested so you don't see them in the muck. Milbemax is good, trust it to do it's job and stop studying the dog **** so intently!
activeviii
i do my cocker once a year with panacur 3 day dose and then milbemax once a year. if i think he has been up to no good i will worm as needed. my pup in on advocate neck drops but im not sure about them. i will give her a 3 day worming to make sure at the end of month as this advocate should do worms, fleas and ear lice amongst other things. she still has ear lice so im treating with otodex now. because of this im not sure about the worms as i have found none yet. Phil. Phil, Not sure where you got that regimen from, but you're not doing the best for your dogs. The only product that kills the most common dog tapeworm (Dipylidium) on your list there is the Milbemax and once a year is not often enough for tapeworm. In an adult dog tapeworms are probably more important than roundworms and worming must target both groups of worms equally well. In reality we are looking at either Drontal or Milbemax usually 4 times a year, every three months. As I said for high risk dogs more frequent worming may be required. There will be very few working dogs that require less frequent treatment. Advocate is a good product in that it kills ear mites, lice, fleas, and roundworms. It does not kill tapeworms. This is ok in a puppy as they are all born infected with roundworms and tapeworms only become a problem later. I find either Advocate/Stronghold good for roundworms and ear mites, but if you buy a multipack when the dog is a puppy it can grow quickly and you can be under dosing. That is the only reason I can see for it not working is if it is not applied correctly, some dodgy imported fake drug or a under-dose applied! Panacur is good in puppies as it's really safe and it is good in bitched before they whelp, but doesn't really have a place in an adult dogs routine worming regimen, it's an old drug far superseded by Milbemax/Drontal. Drontal have an excellent website if you want to learn a bit more about worming. http://www.drontal.com/index.html
darren m
Apache do either of these brands kill lung worms and just how common are they . thanks
al4x
Darren I believe stronghold kills them at the larvae stage, personally I use stronghold monthly and drontal once every 3 months. Stronghold kills most things except tapeworm and drontal gets them. The plus point with any dog prone to ear mites etc is that stronghold kills them before you get problems. You are 100% correct re the Stronghold. It treats and prevents the lungworm. You also correctly point out it only does roundworms and not tapeworms! Lungworm is increasing in prevalence in this country, but tends to be confined to the south at the moment, it will certainly be everywhere eventually. al4x
stronghold is spot on Darren and available from your vet, simply use one tube a month and pour onto the skin on the dogs neck and it kills fleas, roundworms, any mites etc and as apache confirmed it kills lungworm at an early stage and because you use it regularly the dog is always protected. apache
For the sake of completeness Stronghold is the only product licenced to prevent and treat lungworm in dogs. Advocate and Panacur have data sheet claims to treat the condition. There are other drugs that are likely to have activity against the worm, just the company hasn't done the work to prove it's effectiveness.
