henry d
Are you going to be using decoys too ? If so for mallard I use HS calls with a single and double reed. Double reed are "raspier" but singles can give you the edge if the birds are skittish and you need a "come back" call. Get a double to start as it is easier to blow. This is as good as any for instruction on calling but don`t get hung up on the feed chatter unless you are on stubbles or flloded flashes that duck are feeding on. As for Goldies and Tufties, I don`t shoot them as they are not to my liking and I don`t shoot anywhere that has Pochard, but imagine they will taste similar. That said, I have had tufties and goldies pitch into a mix of Mallard and Teal deeks. If you can imitate the growling whistle of the divers then well done :o
angrymallard
hey there, i shoot at lough neagh too, it's nice to meet another local wildfower. I have a thing for buying duck calls i just cant control myself sometimes . Anyway i would recommend a good mallard call and for lough neagh its good to have a call which can carry a long way out into the water and my personal favorite is the double nasty, its loud and has a great raspy call whith a great tone, you can buy it at tidepool wildfowling, google it if you are interested. You can get specialised calls for divers such as tufeted duck, i have never used one but sometimes a mallard call can be reassuring and help these birds decoy too. I got into a bit of bother this year though as some man from around the corner from us was complaining about me calling ducks, even though he and his friends also use them and he was threating us that he could remove us from the land which "he does not own" but he claims to have the shooting rights, but whether he is telling the truth or not is to be found out. Just a word of warning. Edited August 29, 2010 by angrymallard

scolopax
TJ, the little gunshop in Pocklington, W.Richards, normally has a few good quality duck calls in stock. A question for the guys who shoot loch Neagh, just out of interest how is the shooting controlled on the loch, is it by arrangement with the farmers, is it 'free' shooting on the water intself or do you need to be a member of a wilfowling club? ziplex
I bought a couple of calls from Paddlesdown, the 'Banded Lady' and 'Sweet Cherry'...........both very easy to get a reasonable sound from. I have got a Buck Gardner call as well but found the sound a bit harsh?! Paddlesdown did have some videos posted of them being blown, plenty on Youtube too Edited August 30, 2010 by ziplex

Thanks TJ
