lottie Dave
As the title suggests, I have a allotment and rats are a problem. Not so much at this time of year but when things start drawing in. Mr Fox does an admirable job of keeping them under control at the moment. Problems arise in the winter months when ratty takes refuge in sheds. With this in mind I am thinking of a pistol to despatch them. Top of the list is a Alecto or HW45. I'm not keen on anything CO2. Are there any members here who could advise me on other choices. Despatching the rats is likely to be in low level light conditions but not the dead of night, could I get away with a red dot sight. Responces appreciated. Dave
Dekers
There are very situations where you will get rid of rats by shooting, you need a program of control. This is commonly rodent monitors, break backs, gas, live traps, shooting, cats whatever. Pistols are only any use for despatch after capture on the whole and once they are captured any air pistol should do the job! Have you thought of the crossman king ratcatcher they are another good little rat gun and i think they retail at about £150 the downside to them is that they are co2 which you said you didnt want. Brocock make a pcp pistol called aim x which is single shot and i think that retails at about £290 or fx make one called ranchero which is a 8 shot i think and that retails at some out rageous price of £600 or more i cant remember. The other option is get a terrier haha! hope this helps Tom Edited August 15, 2010 by tomhw100
lottie Dave
I have thought of a feral cat. I doubt any rescue place would allow me however. They would want a home visit and be immediately told to go away by my dogs. They are a bit funny about things. Leaving the ferrets there is out the question as you never know when the local vandals are likely to hit. Current rifles are somewhat unweildely(spl) for close quarters. I think it has to be a pistol. The price though, that's frightening.
tomhw100
i dunno if would want to leave ferrets with a load of rats either though, rats will give ferrets a good run for their money,if you want a pistol it needs to be as close to the legal 6lb ft as it can be cheaper pistols like the webley thypoon or co2 pistols are really just for plinking although deep down i dont think any pistols whether they are 6lb ft or under are really meant for hunting. the other alternative is to smoke them with a machine and use your dogs or trap them. lottie Dave
I have layed traps in previous years and got some of the blighters, also used the blue poison blocks that slip over a nail. They are just that damn persistant. I have gone to the length of camping out on the lottie with dogs and ratty keeps his head down. They aren't that numerous that the place is over run its the damage one or two cause. And how many babies have they got hidden
bruno22rf
Crossman 1322 will do the job at reasonable ranges-dont buy the new ones cos they are garbage-you need an earlier metal breached one-some guy on the airgun forum tunes them as well-most likely the most powerfull pistol on the market for the money-dammed accurate as well. parky844
is it your land or does it belong to the council ? there may be an issue with shooting if its council owned. Edited August 16, 2010 by parky844
farmboy99
i used to use a webley nemisis to kill rats on the farm takes some practise to get good enough to be death each time though. use a pellet that fragments on impact i would you could eve use a rifle with a laser? might be a better option like a multishot ultra in .22 that'd be a goodun for the job
