griff83
hi all iv been shooting clays for around 6 months with friends that are at a ok standard but im having trouble with my eyes most say keep both eyes open when im shooting but the thing is i cant focus down the rib with both eyes open so i have to shut my left eye , is this going to impede my progression or do i need to just keep trying to shoot both eyes open ? shootnfish
I dont shoot clays only pigeon decoying but that makes no difference i shoot with my right eye closed always have done and do just as well as those who dont. if its how you feel best stick with it. lspencer
I mostly shoot with my left eye shut also. I have tried with both open, but found 9/10 times i would miss. I purchased an 'easy hit sight' for my gun and found that although it hasn't made me hit all targets it has increased my aim with both eyes open. So the majority of the time i track the clay with both eyes then last second close my left. Hasn't stopped me getting some good averages. It will almost certainly impede your progression. As you have said you're focussing on the rib and closing one eye, rifling the target. You need to be seeing the target clearly and your gun should be seen in your peripheral vision, not the other way round. Your gun fit should be that every time you mount it is pointing exactly where your eyes are looking, so when you pull the trigger the shot goes where you're looking. You have to forget the gun and trust your eyes. If your gunmount is perfect and you keep your gun moving after the shot you will see your scores creep up. Obviously there's more to it than that and you'll need to build up 'sight pictures' over time to deal with differing targets. The one thing that is constant however, is you must ALWAYS focus on the target, not the gun. To get the most out of your shooting it's imperitive that your gun fits properly and your mount is consistent. It is much easier to judge speed and distance with both eyes open. Get someone to throw a ball for you to catch. Do you watch the ball (target), or your hands (gun)?
griff83
great advice cheers guys im going to the boar tomorrow and im going to try some with both eyes open and focusing on the clay not the sight down my rib
clayman
Sounds like the comb is too low - get a comb raiser on the gun so you are looking along the rib over the bead, eye focused on the target. The moment you try to focus on the rib or bead, you will stop the gun swing. The eye too low is always a problem. The correct height is 3mm high of the rib, but higher still is still good for eye-sight and the only effect of the eye being, say 6mm high, is the centre of pattern is raised about 3 1/2" at 30yds - too small a lift to be detrimental to the shooting while the higher eye no longer struggles with focus and vision issues. COACH
Have a lesson with a good coach and he/she will advise you or even sort the problem. Sounds like either cross eye dominance or low comb, maybe both.
JonD
Completely agree with Clayman and Coach. I'm cross dominant and was advised to make the best of both eyes and stuck with it for months, it didn't come overnight but now shoot with both eyes open but also use an easyhit, it's a good training tool and works for me very well. I would have a few sessions with a coach you interact well with and work at it. Clayman, good to meet & shoot with you on Saturday Jon. magman
Have a strong left master eye and if not closed see double vision so close left eye simples If you can shoot with both eye's open though do it as everything seems 20 yrds further away shutting one eye love to be able to shoot both eye's open but can't
