magnet arms

i'm going to make a pigeon magnet as many of you have basically because i'm too tight to buy one but don't know how long to make the arms. what have you guys done or what sort of length are the arms on your shop bought magnets?

you can get rods from inside a car boot from scrap yard car needs to have boot lid [derek]

there's a couple of used ones in sporting shooter,ones £40 with battery i think,that's cheaper surely?
