New Oportunities

There is no chance in my opinion that the cull will happen by rifle open season style, there would be a flood of variation applications to every FLO. It will be a case of the landowner gaining a licence then contractors would be called in to gas them. I honestly think any other way would be asking for trouble and personally speaking and my farmers feel the same it doesn`t need to happen.

Have a look at the DEFRA site:

licences will only permit culling by cage-trapping and shooting, and by shooting free-running badgers, carried out by trained, competent operators with appropriate firearms licences. Defra ruled out gassing and snaring on the basis that we do not have sufficient evidence to demonstrate that they are humane and effective methods of culling.

Good to see they are not using the gassing method, saw it used on the railway when they had a big purge on badger sets undermining the embankments, never saw a clean job. Also good to see they will be basically using contractors though, but as has been mentioned on the other thread i feel this is asking for trouble especially over 4 years.

Surely there must be some other mammals that we can also come up with some lame excuse to cull as well.

How about the Red Squirrel, I am sure they probably carry fleas or something.

Understand that needs must for some, and others just plain can't help themselves from killing something if they can, but shooting badgers ain't my cup of tea...

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments of MC and Raja Clavata. I am also not sure that the motives of some for shooting foxes is always protection of livestock or game, more to do with marksmanship, fieldcraft and dare I say it blood lust and before I get shot down in flames I did say some.

I have tried to find it and given up but I remember at least one poster on here asking if anyone had any "foxing" (a horrible term) as they had all the gear & the obvious desire but very inconveniently no foxes on the land they had permission to shoot over.

While i'm not a big fan of killing foxes or badgers, there is a need for it in some circumstances, the chap you are talking about has foxes on his perm but is not allowed to shoot centrefire there, a little strange i know, but he is offering a service none the less.

Secretly tho, i do agree with you about the blood lust thing, it's just not for me to judge.
