A few hours on the Crows

Me and a mate got a chance today to have a go at a few crows on a field of stubble. We looked at the field tuesday evening and saw about 150 feeding on it so we decided to attack it tis-Morning.

I set the alarm for 7 and we were gone at half 7, we had to walk too the field as we dont have any wheels yet(hope to get a car in the next few months) it took about 40 mins to walk there.

We had planned to sit between a row of bales that were situated right were we wanted to be shooting the crows but low and behold when we got there, bales gone and only two rotten ones left so we rolled them together wasnt a great set up but the best we could do. I set out 4 decoys.

The crows started coming in groups of 4-5 every 10-15 mins.

We only managed 7 rooks and a grey crow but it was a very enjoyable(My biggest bag ever was 10 pigeons, we dont get too many pigeons/crows in my part of the world) So I was very pleased to shoot them, my mate also throughly enjoyed the day he's still waiting for his licence to come through for a shotgun.

The strangest shot of the day was the grey crow I shot at him when he was about 15yrds out I couldnt believe he diddnt drop but I new I defo hit him and when he had flown on 40-50 yrds he dropped stone dead.

We plan to buy a few more cartidges and have ago at them next week try,get a few more hopefully :good::lol:

Great day had by all!

Well done, bag size does not mater as long as you had a good day.

Sorry but bag size always matters its the reason you keep improving your field craft.

And if they would of looked for a hawthorne or tree and spent half an hour making a decent hide, they would still be there now shooting them.

thats easy to say if you have had someone teach you but remember one doesnt even have a sgc yet so probably

not a lot of experience everyone has to start somewhere a bit of advice might of been a better option

and over 30 years you learned a few tricks dave.

these greenhorns need advice even if its not asked for, and i am not one for patting backs on a job that could of been done better and the countryside enjoyed more, im not having that they enjoyed shooting 6 or 7 as much as 60 or 70, im just not buyin it.

doesnt matter to me if people that i reply to, dont take the advce in the manner meant as others will, ive no wish to be unpopular, however ive no wish either to die without passing on some of my 30+ years of experience.

my lack of emoticons may sometimes betray my true gestures in just plain print.

i have had days when i have shot only 6 or 7 pigeons or crows and thrroughly enjoyed them more so then some days when i have shot 70-80

quality over quantity is what they say...

but i gues they also say.. each to ther own!

its not always about big bags (well obviously only to you!)

i would rather shoot 3 really good high crossing pigeons or crows than 100 nearly motionless above decoys

fair enough, my emphasis was on field craft ensuring better days, but after i had humped fence posts fencing roll, mallet etc and spent threequarters of an hour the night before making a hide aswell as the travelling time i expected a good bag, and if someone started turning hay or similar a few farms away and stole all my customers i would be sick, thats all.

I also meant to tell them, even tho they only started with 4 plakkies, they should still as a rule swap fresh for plakki until they had 4 dead uns, as a rule plastic make wary more than they kid, and i said as a rule.

today obviously the lighting was right as they kidded in a greyback, and thats not easy with plastic.

Thanks for the replys lads, we normally would use a camo net and hide poles etc.. but as I said in the original post we taught there was going to be a good few bales there to make a decent hide but they must have been taken away the evening before.

The next time were going we'll bring the net

I also forgot to write in the original post that we ran out of cartidges :good:

I've only been shooting for just over a year so I'm sure in a few years time I'll be getting bigger bags Manxman2.
