I ead the books many years ago with my first dog{lab} interesting tho they were, to be absolutely basic, you have to break a dogs spirit early, not his spunk, getup and go, but his own single mindedness as you state, i chose to do that at a very early age, by taking food away half way thru being eaten, and making him sit for longer periods than he wanted to, if he lay down i picked him back up etc, if he growled as he got braver when his food or bones were touched he got a quick smack, basically you are the pack leader, and the sooner he knows the better. And constant correction 24/7 i think has a big influence on what the end result will be, i was lucky in always working for myself my dogs were with me near enough 24/7, even the pub every time. I guess i can give up any thoughts about being a pro dog trainer now then.

I got fined once for armed tresspass. In my late teens, i saw a load of blackies using a stubble down by what was then the new industrial estate, a collection of nissan hut workshops etc. The land owner and his wife had an office there, so i parks outside his office, goes in and sees him, gets his blessing, and off i go, leaving my car on his park beside the field. My m8 was with me and we cross fired them from different hides, couple of hours later a copper comes waltzing down the hedge, finds me first { i did write comes across me first, but then thought better}. Gets all my details, which he already knew from my car reg, and starts off on his way, but not before counting all the dead birds and taking full stock of our activities, hide etc. The landowner at the office denied he gave me permission, i went down to see him, he apologised and said he didnt want any trouble with the police, so he left me out to dry, a/hole. everything was legal apart from that, there wouldnt of been a problem, even the copper really knew the score with my car parked under his office window, made the local papers tho when i was fined. summat like local youth found shooting without permission, then went on to explain how i was shooting out of a constructed hide and how many birds i had nailed. A bit like the internet of the early 70s.

both the 1/4 / improved and half were a combination i used alot for alrounding like the OP, and like the OP i also opted for my little nikko skeet most of the time. would i do things different given the time back, i doubt it, maybe used half choke in the second barrel alittle more often.

I was talking to a dairy farmer at the local shop the other day, i asked him about maze after reading about it here, he told me theres alttle bit of it getting grown here now, wasnt a crop i saw standing whilst i shot tho. A few other interesting types of crop seem to be being tried aswell, we live in interesting times, these crops may change the demographics of species here, i.e. more pigeons, who knows.
