Cranfield
Out this morning shooting rooks and crows over harvested maize and I set out about 20 crow/rook decoys. These are a mix of flocked and unflocked standing birds, but all have the plastic peg that you slot under the tail when not in use. These pegs have to be about the most useless things for mounting the decoys, its difficult to get enough of the peg through the hole in the decoys back to make it stable. In this mornings very strong wind I had some falling off the peg and others almost spinning around on the peg. Has anyone invented a better method for putting these type of decoys on a peg ? I came home with the intention of drilling a hole in the decoy right under the hole in the decoy's back (like a full bodied pigeon decoy), or making the hole in the back level with the hole underneath. Why these holes are offset on all crow/rook decoys I don't know.
steve_b_wales
On my decoys, there is a small hole in the tail. I just insert a garden cane through this hole, and them insert the cane into the ground.
Cranfield
Steve, I think that is the hole that you store the peg in when intransit, unless yours have no other holes in them. I did try a bamboo cane in that hole, but the hole was bigger than the cane and the decoy just rolled over. I could try a thicker cane. MM
Cranfield, what about a tent peg pushed down through the top hole?
Bluebarrels
On my decoys, there is a small hole in the tail. I just insert a garden cane through this hole, and them insert the cane into the ground. Most of my shooting is crows etc, like steve i use the small hole in the tail, but i use strong fencing wire cut down into lengths, because its thin and strong it goes into even the hardest ground then insert your FB crow decoy onto the wire via the small hole in the tail, this also allows the decoy to move in the wind, this is the best solution ive found and even in the strongest winds, presents your decoys nicely. Another thing worth mentioning, the legs/feet you get with FB decoys,i never bother with, but if you do,you can drill a hole through the base, and secure with a peg or nail BB
Cranfield
I don't bother with the legs/feet either, they are quite useless. I think I am going to get the drill out tomorrow and improve the design of these things.
THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
Put the leg base in the dirt not on top. Never had a problem. If the wind is that bad they wont look natural, live birds have feathers blown away from the body in high wind.
