AdamW
Well, I seem to have no run out of idea's My 2yr old ESS it now failing to respond to most training I do and has been getting worse over the last month or so, he can hunt OK, and I have managed to bring him in closer to me (he used to just run off) if I am not hunting him he has no interest in any thing but sniffing the floor and having a pee, he won't retrieving a thing, If I through a dummy and then send him for it, he run half way then stops and does his own thing with no interest in the dummy or me, I am beginning to loose it now, he has been a problem dog from the start (although mostly my fault) I am at my wits end and have no idea what to do next if anything can be done! The other problem is I have a cocker that is just so different and a cracker and only 7 months old. I and beginning to think I have a pet not a gun-dog! new to the flock
Try starting his training from scratch. Work as if he has never had a lesson and perform the lessons as such. Do not skip anything, or rush. As far as the retrieving goes, take him out and play ball. Put the dummy away until he has a desire to play. Keep the retrieves short, but plentiful and use a very happy upbeat voice. Teach him that chasing something and bringing it back can be a fun game. AdamW
NTTF, Thanks for the advise, I seem to have had to do this before, The problem I seem to have with him is he is total disinterested in me when out, and I don't know how to change that! I am finding it VERY frustrating now, and I really am at the end of my tether, which is no good for training what so ever, I don't even feel like taking him out now, as I know I will get very frustrated, I just don't know where it all went wrong, Even going back to basic will be hard, as soon as we are out, he won't listen to me or take a blind bit of notice, he seems to be a very strong headed dog ( I have been told this by others) Adam
tenbears10
Have you thought about some lessons Adam? Not just for the dog but you as well (don't mean to be rude). I went through similar things as you describe and was at a loss with what to do. We contacted a gun dog trainer and they did hour lessons with us and if nothing else it showed that our spaniel could do what we were asking he just wasn't doing it for us. One of the biggest problems was getting him to run off to show the trainer how bad he was. Butter wouldn't melt in his mouth during the sessions but he soon started stepping out of line and we could work on correcting it. It took lots of hard work on our part to get him out of the habbits we let him get into in the begining but it is worth it in the end. He can be a little **** even now but it is not very often and I usually know why it happened so I can put a stop to it next time.
