Spaniel
Hi Just looking at some Duck calls and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using any of the HS range of calls. Black Ice Red Baron Double Reed Mallard Just after some views how they preform etc as I already have a DJ wooden call and was looking at these on the web... cheers
TJ91
my red baron arrived a few days ago. i tried a tune with it in the house and it sounded ok. walked down to the bottom of the field (300metres away) and told the girlfrends dad to have a listen He said it sounded very convincing from that distance fingers crossed it will pull a few to my deeks! I got it off the bay at a good price and it came with a double lanyard..
Spaniel
Cheers for that, i was looking at them on there also.... There was a sound recording of the Double mallard but not the others...and that one sounded quite good, how different is the sound of the Red Baron compared to the Double Mallard
TJ91
a friend has the double mallard..i have only hear dhim blow it once and it sounded very good..but he is alot better than me at calling The only reason i got the red baron instead was..i was told it was easier to use not sure how true that is but it sounds good to me I have an old acme call.. cost me about 7quid 3 years ago and compared to that the red baron is the dogs dangliesi have i am looking at buying a couple more calls, i will no doubt loose them. i am tempted to get buck gardner double and the others from the HS range imo for the price you really cant go wrong with any of the HS range Edited November 18, 2010 by TJ91
henry d
I use the black ice and bill collector, the former is a double reed and has the raspier sounds the latter a single reed and higher pitch and louder call. Having the two lets me imitate that there are several birds as well as being able to "highball" call(as the yanks call it) and to give different chatter if I need to. Of the two I like the black ice best.
Spaniel
Got to admit i like the more raspier sounding calls myself. I also like the Buck Gardner Fowl mouth call, but thought when i seen these HS calls, i would see what they were like. I have emailed the company to see if they have any sound files available to listen to, just deciding which one to go for Cheers Ian
mudpatten
HS calls are great although I prefer Buck Gardner calls myself. The B.G. "Double nasty" is a popular double reed call which sounds very realistic. Another great sounding B.G. call is the "Mallard magic" which is actually the least expensive call they make. The real knack to successfully blowing a duck call is to learn the correct technique, something that is especially easy today, just look on Youtube for "duck calling instruction." Get some pointers on technique, and then practice, practice and practice some more. That first occasion when you turn a flying bird through 180 degrees and he comes back with his neck craning down looking for his mates is unforgettable. Spaniel
I found that my DJ wooden call seems to produce quite a wierd sound when it starts to get damp....which is normaly about the time when i want to use it most... Im thinking that i would not have this problem with the acrylic ones, is this correct ? Im shooting on open foreshore so i need the sound to carry quite a bit to be honest
angrymallard
The HS black ice was my favourite call by HS, it had a good raspy call and good carrying volume out over the water but it could be difficult to use if you can't manage the technique. Now i prefer to use the Buck gardner "double nasty" it is easier to blow, sounds good and has good volume.

Spaniel
Cheers MP Got a bit of practising todo with this one, as blowing this one the same as my DJ call, does not produce anyway near the same sound..but it is deffinatly louder, which will be great out on the foreshore
mudpatten
It won`t sound the same as your DJ call since the modern polycarbonate calls require a slightly different air presentation technique than the older style long barrel, slow vibrating, long reed wooden calls. You may find the Buck Gardner "Call Academy" series on You tube of some interest since, unlike some of the other instructional clips, Buck actually explains and illustrates some of the important little technical points omitted by other teachers. If you get really stuck, drop me a PM and we`ll do some instruction over the phone. It`s not ideal since the phone will lop off the upper and lower register of the call but it is do-able and it may help you make progress more quickly. I`m a Buck Gardner Calls UK pro staffer. Spaniel
The old tounge position makes a difference, excellent YouTube links, but I have been told to "Shut Up" by the Mrs as she is putting the kids to bed, But I am producing a quack so will practise again tomorrow
mudpatten
With some correct coaching duck calling is`nt difficult to master. The only other thing I would say is, you need to be brutally honest with yourself about the sounds you`re making. If they sound significantly different from your chosen instruction medium, it pays to seek advice as to why that is and correct the fault before it becomes a habit. Good luck and keep practicing! mudpatten
Two more sites that budding duck and goose callers might want to take a look at are www.CallingDucks.com and www.Callers for Christ.com. The latter is one of those midwestern US Bible Belt type sites but the calling instruction is excellent.Just skip the religious stuff if it is`nt your cup of tea.
