Toplands,

Went to this ground today for only the second time in about three years. As this post explained this was the re-opening shoot after a period of closure and I think the machinery was a bit "rusty" as I'll explain after the good bits.

The ground was quite easy to find following the directions on the website, everyone, staff and fellow shooters were friendly and welcoming and a dry & clean portacabin for booking on and the canteen. The best bit was the food, freshly cooked, good quality and without doubt the best bacon & sausage barm I've tasted in a long time.

The ground was quite clean & tidy with 7 sporting stands arranged along a hard track, there was a DTL & a skeet layout but we didn't try either of those. The targets were mainly OK, biased on this occasion to the club shooter but 1 or 2 of the stands were quite challenging especially a most peculiar looking contraption that threw a simultaneous fast R to L looper and an old fashioned vertical teal!

As it was the first shoot for 4 months I assume that was the reason that we had trap trouble on 4 of the 7 stands, a bit frustrating but I'm sure they will be sorted for the next shoot (don't think it was major problems just lack of use). I wouldn't let this put anyone off giving Toplands a try, as I said I'm sure they'll have it sorted within a very short time.

All in all, recommended, you'll be made very welcome, extremely well fed and hopefully shoot a mixture of (reliable) targets.

Oh and by the way the website didn't mention it but the ground is felt or fibre wad only and they were a bit steep if you buy them from the ground.

Mr Potter

Thanks for coming up on Sunday as it was quite a way for you. Sorry about some of the traps sticking. I have spoken to Roy the owner and he thinks a few dodgy batteries after standing for 4 months as well as the traps needing to get back into the swing of things was the problem. Rest assured that new batteries have been ordered today and all traps should be working without fault next weekend.

Glad you enjoyed Alison's bacon and sausage barm as this is the main thing I have missed on a Sunday morning whilst shooting elsewhere.

The website has been updated to tell everyone it is Fibre wad only.

Feel free to visit anytime you are more than welcome as Im sure you know.

Thanks Again
