Beardo
as a rough guide 1" high at 100 yards (178 yard zero) is a good all rounds starting point for general hunting (how often will you shoot out to 300 yards?!) Without knowing your velocity this is only a rough guide. 0 -1.75 50 0.12 100 1.0 150 0.73 200 -0.91 250 -4.18 300 -9.41 though going by your 2.5" rule a 200 yards zero looks good.... 0 0.0 50 0.7 100 1.4 150 0.9 200 0.0 250 -1.2 300 -2.
seeker
try this .. free... it works http://www.jacksonrifles.com/ballistics.htm though without a chrono you could play with the programme to match your target .. ie sight shoots x inches high at 100 and y low at 200 = approx z fps?? ostrea
Thanks very much for that great help. Would not anticipate shooting out to 300 yds very often but i feel at the moment beyond that range would be beyond my comfort zone.
maddog546
I zero both my .223 and .270 at 200 yds as it gives the best ballistics for the most common ranges that are encountered and suitable ranges to take a shot.
snowz
i have 100 zero for day use and then dial in to 200yd zero for lamping foxes and dont often shoot out past 200yds at night any way. What is the length of the barrel without mod? what scope you using, has it got target turrets? with out the actual velocity of the round you couldn't be exact but you wouldn't go too far wrong on a 200yd zero shooting out to 300yds, or do as i do zero 100yds for day use and adjust to 200 for night time use. If you could get your fps and barrel length i could work out a rough drop chart for you out to whatever distance you need but you would have to test the adjustments on paper first and alter if needed before using on live quarry atb Richard

If you download this onto your PC it will give you all the data you are looking for. Hunting Nut Ballistics Software. If you need a hand getting it working let me know via pm and I will talk you through it. It has most of the functions that Nightforce Exbal has without the £100 price tag. ostrea
Thanks for all the replys very helpful. Barrel length without the mod is 23 and three quarter inch, with a S&B 2.5-10x56 scope, so far only been shooting at an indoor range at 100m wit my rifle, This was the easiest route to getting a 223 on my certificate In the process now of having my certificate changed to land use as well as range. shot a friends 223 up to 300m on his permission consistently hitting within one inch groups of five at that range. Thanks for the link to POI downloaded with no problem from that link, tried a few times last week through another site with no joy. , Hope to get to the range this weekend and see if someone has a chrono i could use otherwise ill have to put one down on my Xmas list!!
