Swamp Beast
the 1st prolonged cold spell of this winter; we didnt shoot our ponds last year during the cold spell due to the ban so not sure on duck behaviour but our ponds will have been frozen for over a week now. How do ducks behave during frozen spells; ie if we feed on top of the ice and they know theres food still there are they liable to continue to come in or do they ****** off and find clear water?? Whats your experiences? Thanks SB

shakin stevens
At our place we are lucky anough to have a flight pond with running water through it so it doesnt freeze, might shoot it early days when the freeze sets in then just leave it and feed it and let the ducks rest on it through the cold days then shoot again after the freeze has eased, other than that most ducks will head for rivers round our way when ponds are frozen over. ollie
At this stage there shouldn't be any problem with the ducks condition. They have plenty of fat reserves. If the cold weather was more prolonged then you should possibly give them a break.
twitchynik
We were out tonight. Thankfully our waters don't freeze over so we always have duck flying in. We keep it well fed throughout the year with grain and never have any troubles with no birds showing up. Don't shoot all the time, the odd weekend here and there. Find early season is better/easier for early afternoon feeding and evening shooting where you don't freeze your bits off! But recently we've not seen much malard. In fact, hardly any at all. Plenty of teal about with the last two mornings seeing 22 Sat and 15 today lift. Not sure why there malard aren't about but tonight was good shooting with at least 20 teal coming in low and fast. Between us we had 4 teal and 1 widgeon, which was a pleasant surprise.
