tenbears10
I've been after this little grey b@stard for weeks. Missed one of his mates but this one when down like a sack of spuds. He had a really thin tail and a bulging eye so all in all probably did him a favour
Hunter
Looks like you hit him with the shottie? The bulging eye bit is odd.. though I have had that before with headshots using the airgun. The pressure of the pellet impact caused the other to pop out a bit. In this case, could well have been from a fall.
tenbears10
Yep he was in a tree only about 15 feet away and 20 foot up so he was hit pretty hard and then fell to the floor. He looked generally in bad condition, as well as being dead of course.
Frank
Nah, he just shot it in the brain and as you have said, the pressure poped it out.
Maori Haz
A bit of an "eye-ball paul" tree rat eh? I agree it's just probably the impact of being hit in the head- the pressure and all! MH
Hunter
was the squirrel wet, or is that just messy fur? looks a bit tatty though it was raining in most places of england today
tenbears10
He had quite a few bare patches on his fur but I did stand in the rain for an hour and a half to get him along with one pigeon that roosted nearby.
Hunter
Whats it like hunting squirrels with a shotgun? do you have to be very close range? Have considered a 20bore when the certificate clears, for squirrels.

tenbears10
If you think that you can shoot a pigeon at what ever distance with a shotgun then squirrels are no different. They have a nasty habbit of going to the back of the tree if they see you and they are very quick but if you are patient then they skip along a branch and BLAM. It isn't difficult to tell where they are in the wood as I'm sure you know so you just need to wait.
Hunter
Yup.. listen for the tell-tale squirrel chitter.. then try to pin point it. Darn difficult to hit a running squirrel in the head, whilst running  so this is one of the reasons I would like to try some different hunting tools. One thing I have learnt: Squirrels are out in any weather.. rain.. snow.. summer hot weather, but they dont come out to play much at mid day. they need to be up from around half 5am to around half 10, then from about half 3pm till 5pm.
