Frank
Went out again in the valley below at dawn this morning, was rather windy. We managed to get within 221yds of 2 fallow does laying down below a bank. All we could see was their top part of the neck and heads :o and they could see us and were watching every move. We were trying to get closer, but one got up and troted behind a tree and started barking :o . My freind said take the shot at the one lying down, aim 2 inches to the right of the neck he said, as it was windy, i thought this made sense, as the wind was blowing from right to left. Boom, looking threw the scope the doe was still lying down, quiet unharmed , i missed :o :( . It got up and ran like the wind taking the other doe with it . O well you cant connect everytime, my freind then said, prehaps you should of aimed dead on  , i thought to myself, 'prehaps i should of waited for a better opertunity. Pics below of where we were. Edited February 14, 2006 by Frank

Hubertus
Hi Frank, that is quite a long shot for such a small target as the neck is. Be happy, that you missed it and that you didnt wounded it. Its not my intention to be rude, its just my opinion. Nice pics. It seems to be a nice area. Best wishes from Germany Hubertus

Dunkield
Frank, You have already said it, make your own judgement, and as Hubertus said that was an ambitious shot to put it mildly! Some times you just have to admit the conditions aren't in your favour and give up - until next time of course

We are back in the area on Saturday morning, so i will be much more thoughtfull of the next time a shot presents itself, thats if he does not shoot one himself and offers the rifle to me. :*) Edited February 14, 2006 by Frank
miffy
Can't win em all Frank and at least it was a clean miss as hubertus has already said. Looks like it would be difficult to stalk into anything close on that land though.

lazza
Been there, done that, bought the bloody T Shirt. When I missed a fox it used to take me a couple of days to stop thinking about it! Luckily the times I did miss, helped me to now know straight away whether it's a shot or not. Don't beat yourself up Frank, there was no harm done. The main thing is to only do them once and then learn from them. Your enjoying what your doing, and from what I've seen doing it very well ,don't let this put a damper on it.

Dunkield
I missed a Fox, in broad daylight at about 100 yards on Saturday, from a highseat and I got it to stop running by shouting at it, I am only just about ready to start talking about it :*) :*) I don't have a lack of confidence as a result, I know I can do it and there is nothing wrong with my tools, but as it was the only 'shot' of weekends deerstalking that presented itself to me I am mightily p*ssed of at balls'ing up the opertunity - oh well - next time..... Hubertus
Frank, you have learned your lesson and reflected about what you have done wrong. Thats the most important thing to me. There is no hunter who have never made a mistake - me included. Important is how you handle the mistakes. And if you are self-critical after that you are on the right way. Best wishes, Hubertus

To compound it (yes it does get worse) as we were after Red/Roe I had let 2 other foxes go that were easy shots earlier in the weekend. One from a highseat that sat in front of me for a good half hour in the late afternoon sun, but I didn't want to disturb any deer that may have been arround, of course none turned up, so with hindsight (no pun intended!) I should have shot done it after all. And one that ran up towards me and my mate stalking through the woods. I sibnalled to my to stop ans we stood still while he got to within about 15 feet of us before saw or smelt us so we must have been doing something right! So having let those 2 off the hook I thought I would drop the hammer on Foxy number 3, and he was the one that I missed Edited February 15, 2006 by stuartp

This way we get the fox and the deer, but not allways. :o
