sako751sg
Went to the Ma in laws yesterday evening about half sixish to try for a fox with the big moon and clear sky.Been feeding it for the last month with ripped up Pheasies and it had been going every night but lately i couldnt tell with all the snow covering the tracks and the burley. With no wind we just took the .17hmr CZ as fine and quite with minimal disturbance.Again no need for the lamp with the moon and snow so just sat in a bedroom with the window unlatched but closed.Nothing till ten past midnight when a fox appeared from the right of the bait and started sniffing looking for his nightly scoff.Instead of waiting for him to get to the bait i took him when he turned spot on sideways at 53 yards. On the shot he just dropped and never moved an inch.Plenty of stuff to watch when there was no action as the roe were everywhere scraping at the snow to get a mouthful.Next at half oneish another fox appeared and started hunting through the rashy bit about 100 yards from the house.Although he probably would have came to the bait he turned and gave a good shot at 96 yards. On the impact he spun a couple of times and legged it towards the wood.He was pretty slow and i thought he dropped just short of the trees but couldnt make him out.Stayed awake untill quarter to four and told Mac to stag on for a while. He started struggling at 5 so we both got the head down and woke the back of seven. After Rab took the first one back we went to where i hit the second one and there was plenty blood and every bound he had took sent a splash in the snow.Rab went on the trail and found him about 40 yards away with the shot bang on.Was interested to see where the placement was with the one that dropped instant and found it bang on the button entry and had angled through the base of the neck and was very nearly right through.Bonus was a Magpie in the larson too.Downside to the day was following up one of the annual farmers calls saying the roe are hammering his neaps. We went a half hour before sunset and two were already in them.I set for the shot and pulled the trigger but on the report two confused roe just looked in my direction.I spouted another one and again the shot made no difference.I decided not to fire again and check the zero so stood up and this put the deer away. There was a wire fence i was shooting through so went up to check in case somehow i was hitting the wires.Only about 30 yards from the firing point was a hole in the snow where the 2 bullets had went.Obviously through the scope i hadnt noticed the snow in front of the bullets route so a bad schoolboy error. On the plus side the grouping was good. A few pics including some taking in the dark without the flash to show how easy it is to shoot without the lamp.Didnt need the binos and was seeing everything within 200metres.Minus 14 first thing and never rose above minus 10 all day. Frenchieboy
Well done Dave, great write up! That's an awful lot of scope to have on a Hummer, what scope is it please mate? I am about to try an 8-32X60 with a 30mm tube on mine but I thought it might be a bit too much scope!

Its a Nikko Sterling 6-24x56IR Nighteater Frenchie.Nothing fancy but spot on for the .17 and excellent at night without the lamp if its set anywhere from x8 to x12.Your 60 scope should be spot on at light gathering with the big objective but probably will never need all the zoom. It should have read 8-32X50 not 60. It must be something to do with the Glen Moray Single Malt I was drinking last night!
