Doc Holliday
Well, nearly in time for xmas, the sticks I've been making for Mrs H and Iself are almost done but... having trouble with a couple of bits that don't seem to want to bond. On Mrs H's stick, I'm trying to get a Pink Ivory wood foot on to the base. I've been using expoxy resin and despite the first 2 times not working too well, I've resorted to using twice the amount of hardener to resin (was using equal amounts previously). The same for my stick except I'm bonding a small piece of African Blackwood on to the antler that had a bit broken off. I cut the antler back to just behind the break and whittled out some of the centre so the resin would have somewhere to anchor on to and scored the blackwood on the back for the same reason. Both are coming off when sanding and smoothing and it's really getting on my wick now. The only other thing I can think of is pinning it but I don't want to drive anything through the woods and I can't really drill out the centre of the woods either as they are approx 5 mm thick so would run the risk of splitting them. Apart from that, I'm pretty pleased with how they're turning out but any help/advice would be most gratefully received. Doc.
pegleg31
are you using some sort of dowel?. if not i think this is the only way to keep them attached
Doc Holliday
Well, that's part of the trouble, the coloured wood I'm using isn't deep enough to take a dowel of any sort. I'll get some pics and post them (well, try to) to show what I mean.
mick miller
Pics will help but I think you'll struggle to get anything to hold permanently without dowels or pins of some description. I have used threaded brass bar before, combined with epoxy, to get small parts to hold together. I left the bar standing proud of the (in my case) small buffalo horn cap. When the epoxy had set I cut the bar back and polished until I was left with a shiny black cap with a central shiny brass dot. It looked quite nice. Otherwise, you may need to source a thicker piece of material if you do not wish any pins to be visible.
deeksofdoom
You need a dowel of some sort. You can't just glue the whole lot together and expect the different components to stay together if they aren't secured with some sort of dowel. As already said try and put up a few pictures.
