hi

everything you do with you PUPPY should be play orientated and dont worry about a perfect retrieve because its not going to happen for a long time, just build up a relationship with your pup while protecting its soft mouth. forget any ideas about rabbit pens until youve got the basics right, stop stay sit etc etc etc, the age will depend on the dog and owner but remember its a cocker and not a lab

he's still a pup, start off with an old pair of socks or a tennis ball.keep it all fun if he looks bored stop.get him really interested in retrieving by making noises, playing with it.don't worry about him running round you at this age as long as he's enjoying himself.you can always correct this when he's confident in retrieving.DON'T take the dummy/socks/ball off him straight away make a fuss of him while he's got it let him play with it and don't try and make him sit when retrieving at this age.

let him enjoy being a puppy.

Some good advice been given to you there,Do not try to push him to hard to quick let him enjoy his puppy hood, Three basic commands is all you need to concentrate on, The serious stuff usually starts around the nine month onwards stage,

good luck kenny

i always use a pair of my worn socks with a pup.has my scent on :good:

That's cocker owners for you, not big fans of soap and water

Don't bore the wee dog IMO, ten minutes is far too long. Give a couple fo retrieves, get him really keen on going out and be in no hurry to take from him, then stop when he is really keen on another retrieve. Build on that, but get it into him before he discovers that hunting is better.

EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT OPINIONS ON THE TYPE OF DOG THEY WANT BUT WGD SEEMS TO THINK HIS IS THE ONLY OPINION THAT MATTERS, DONT TAKE ANY NOTICE DO IT YOUR WAY MY COCKER RETRIEVES JUST FINE DROPPING HER DUMMY AT MY FEET, JUST A LITTLE PATIENCE AND YOU WILL GET THERE, I THINK YOU HAVE REALY GOT TO GET ANY DOG SO INTERESTED IN THE DUMMY OR WHATEVER YOU ARE THROWING FOR THEM, TO MAKE IT INTERESTING , MAKE A FUSS ABOUT HIM EVERY TIME HE BRINGS BACK WHATEVER YOU THROW FOR HIM , DONT WORRY HE,LL SOON GET THE MESSAGE JUST LIKE WGD MIGHT GET IT THAT OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE DIFFERENT TO HIS MAY BE RIGHT

time and patience are the essence.he is a baby and let him be just that.as mentioned if he wants to play with the dummy let him but at the same time your own knowledge tells you for how long.

cockers imo are very inteligent dogs almost in a way that you dont train them, they train you.

remember you have years ahead with him and beleive me he will surprise you with things you havent taught him.

take your time with him and give him little but often, dont try to through a days training at him in 10 mins.

i have a six yr old cocker bitch and she still pulls things from her hat that has me gobsmacked.

he will get there it just takes time.

good luck with him
