Afternoon everyone, Ive been thinking about buying a new air rifle, As i have just sold my beloved BSA lightning .22, I want it for hunting only. Im looking at the s400k .22, But havent got no filling equipment, So it looks like a springer.

My eyes been set on the hw80k .22, As i have a hw97k .177 for hft and target use id like another weirauch as i like the build quality.

My main question is have any of you got one, And how does it suite you for hunting.

Cheers for your time and replys, lee...... ;)

Well if you want it soley for hunting then I would (and indeed did do) go for a P.C.P. Air Arms are very fashionable at the moment so they are holding their price. I got a s410k and pump from a chap on another forum. Have a look around possibly at a club before deciding. Anything with an HW infront of it is going to be good, so no worries there. The only thing I can thinkof that is a down side to the HW's are their weight. If this is not a problem then you have no worries at all.

Buying second hand will ofcourse xtend your budget no end, but take someone along if you are not sure.

Sorry if I am preaching to the converted here................

Agree with snakebite. I too went from a hw80 and hw77k (both excellent) to a pcp, first a AA S200 and now a AA400. Best gun I have ever had, and worth the extra for a divers bottle. I paid £45 s/h for the bottle, but I get a years worth of shots out of it, before having to pay £2 for a refil.

Go treat yourself to an air arms 400 or 410 and you'll never look back, they are recoilless, very quiet and look the dogs bits too.

Let us know how you get on,

Bindi

i have a bottle sitting here nt doing much (mostly use springers) if you can get to margate or at least part way i would sell to you for 40 (no gauge or hose).

12Ltr 232 bar, Its not the prettiest looking bottle (spray painted back) and has a test until oct this year, but it has got a boot on it so it stands up as well as having the bottle protector mesh thing. I might be able to sort out a hose and guage if your interestead.

or i know someone selling an RWS/webley pump hes asking i thiknk it was 55 but would need to be posted (about 10 quid to post  i should know sold one a couople of months ago!!!)

a second hand S400 would be under 250quid

ROB

If you only intend shooting sub 12 ft/lb I recommend the HW95k as the best hunting spring HW. The 80k is dated, and designed to be shot at 18 ft/lb+ which is why it has a massive piston and chamber compared to the 95k, which is smaller, and shoots great at legal limit power.

HW80's are big, heavy guns, so don't suit everyone. If you do decide to look more at PCP's the HW100 is as good as any on the market. I have one with the aftermarket Venom air reservoir and it is a dream gun.

Don't you have any clubs near you? You are fairly well guaranteed SOMEONE will have both an 80k and a 95k and give you chance to try them?

Without a shadow of a doubt, I would look at buying a second hand PCP rifle with a hand pump. The old springers are truly good fun but for hunting you just cant beat the PCP. Its quiet, reliable, and can be left cocked for prolong periods.

If your patient and look around you should be able to find some cracking deals on a combo kit. As people have mentioned the Air Arms S400 or S410 are cracking rifles, but dont discount the S200 and the 10 shot adaptor. They are all worth looking at.

Both are great rifles which should give you years of good service. The price on the S200 should enable you to get the 10 shot adaptor as well. :P I quite like the S200 after having a good go at a game fair last year, but then i've always preferd the smaller, lighter rifle.

Just remeber that a carbine version "K", will give you less shots per charge over a standard length barrel.

Good decisison.

For hunting, its PCP all the way for me. Pure confidence thing, but I think the quietness of them help alot.

Compared to the working parts slamming forward on a springer the PCPS are praticaly whisper quiet.

Ive got both a PCP and Springer, the airarms tx200hc and the daystate harrier x2. I love shooting the springer, and am taking it hunting with me tomorrow to get it "blooded", but mainly it will be the x2 bagging bunnies and pigeons tomorrow...

If the weather holds off.
