mickmep
personally use 28 gram 7 1/2 shot size. i stick with the same ones for everything, but a couple of guys i go with will switch to size 8 and 9 shot dependant on target. some people use 24 or 21 gram cartridges as well. if your using a semi auto the gun may dictate what you can use, some will not cycle the lighter cartridges. Guest cookoff013
28g lead 7 1/2 or if your using steel you could go lighter and still have the same density of patter. most sporting can be done with either 7.5 and 8. 9s are alittle limp on the extreme ranges. i use steel quite often, 21g steel is great. Moors Man
To be honest 7 1/2 are great for everything. I use 21g Hull Comp X which are a lovely cartridge, over the years I have yet to be presented with a target the cartridge does not break well and the recoil is extremely soft, (through a Browning 525). My son nicked one on a DTL range and thought it had misfired until the clay broke. However if you want extra lead you can usually find 28g in either Cleaver or Kent Velocity for the same price. As someone has said earlier not all semi-autos will recycle 21g though. If you are going to use anything more that 28g its best to check with the ground as some have limits to the loads. Just standard velocities 1200-1250fps in 12g with a VP05 plaswad. I do also shoot some of my 20g subsonics if I take the 20g Teknys with me but they do 1150 in a normal gun and are 28 gram. Just cycles the auto. No bumps from either.
