Cranfield
I have never had a gun just "serviced". I,m not sure modern guns need it, if they are cleaned after use, stored properly and generally looked after. I suppose that a regular service would anticipate certain bits wearing out, like firing pins. But on most guns you may not need to replace them, through the life of the gun. I have a friend who sends his gun away at the end of the game season, for a service and a "deep clean", whatever that means. I suppose this comes under the heading "If it makes you happy, do it". predator
i service my guns myself, the action is a bit dawnting when you first look at it but they are not that hard to do, they must be cleaned with proper gun cleaner and oiled with gun oil ,some parts greased anything that looks worn or scored can be replaced or filed down to suit, you should only take on this task if you are confident to do so and have a little knowledge of gun maintenance and the workings of a gun,you could reblue your own barrels at one time,it takes time to get it right a friend of mine did this a while ago bit of a long drawn out job if you ask me but can be done, not sure exactly how you do it but he used a wallpaper trough, blueing agent a towel and a warm airing cuboard, oh and understanding wife,i think you soak barrels in blueing agent, then rap in towel leave in airing cuboard and repeat till happy i think thats how he did it as it was so long ago must be cheaper way ie pay gun smith
neil
i suppose the other thing is how much use the gun has had and if/when it was last done,i think my local gunsmith has a sort of standard charge for it but i havent got a clue what it is give yours a phone and see ,time scale depends how busy he is i suppose
supergame
It is wise to have your gun serviced. This will depend on how often it is used or more importantly how many shots you fire. I will be Having my latest gun serviced every 12 months or so. Currently I am firing up to and above 1000 shots per month on pigeons and clays. This ammount of shooting will muck up places I cant clean. Its up to the the individual, but a service will certainly do no harm.
everygoodnamewastaken
supergame, Im really lucky if i shoot 500 in a year! I know my dad's mate use to blue his own guns, my dad said it took many attempts and in the end it didnt really work well and looked rather stupid
Yorkshire Pudding
I think a gun service every year is a good idea. I take it you car owners service your cars either yourself, dealer or local grease monkey . I figure HG would be the best person to ask , as what he don't know about guns can be written on the back of a postage stamp. Or should the be on the back of a fireing pin ? all the best yis yp
