72 hour loan and a youngster

Hi All,

Need some advice please!

I have a friend at work who's son (14 years old) has been beating on their leased farm and has been offered a day of shooting in reward for his effort.

He has been shooting shotgun for a long time, but has only used .410 for rough shooting and has always wanted a 20b. His Dad has a SGC.

Q1

Can I loan my 20b as a treat for him, to his dad on 72 hour, and his son shoot it on the pheasant shoot without him there in the presence of another SGC holder? (the adult is the keeper, who will pair with him on the pegs on the land leased by the father).

Q2

I have never shot pheasant, what carts and loads would be suitable? I have vast stocks of 28g 6's, 30g 5's and 24g 7's....are any of them suitable? The gun is fixed choke at 1/4 and 1/2.

Many thanks

K

i'm pretty sure you'd have to loan it the keeper - it's all semantics to a certain extent as nothing gets written on paper (ie loan it to the dad, who then passes is to the keeper on your loan, then back to the dad - the lad should never have it on his own though)

This time of the year 30g 5's would probably be the best bet, though the 6s will still be fine.

Not for a 14 yr old with a 20g

Try some Eley VIP in 28g 5 or 6 shot :good:

You would need to lend your shotgun, through whatever route, to the "occupier" of the land, as long as he was a SGC holder, who could then lend it to the lad as long as he was in the presence of the "occupier"..and it was all done within 72 hours, unless you want to get into a formal paperwork trail!

30 5's would be my choice for the pheasant, but certainly not in 20g for a lad, 24 7 are far too light in my book for the pheasant but will shoot the 20 nicely..so that leaves the 28 6. Many would suggest a good pheasant cart, just a little light in weight and size for me, but it is a 20! :hmm:
