cynic
I was itching to get out for my first hunting trip of the new year. But my first outing of the year didn't go all that well. On Saturday 15th I headed out to my B&B shoot. I arrived at 7.30am, it was really windy with heavy gusts and very overcast, although the weather reports assured me that it wouldn't rain. I spotted a squirrel within a couple of minutes but the gusty wind was making things really tricky. I waited for a lull in the wind and fired... and missed. Damn. Then it started to RAIN! I spotted 4 more squirrels in the woods but they were high in the trees and wouldn't hold still at all. I did see one squizzer lose its footing and fall about 40ft, it just managed to latch onto the tip of a twig a few feet above the ground! Lucky, otherwise he'de have been a goner. Later i saw Bob the owner, who gave me some worrying news, to cut a long story short I could potentially (worst case scenario) lose this shoot in March!!!! I left empty handed at midday having only fired the one shot. Not a great start to the year. I returned to the B&B shoot on Thursday evening for a spot of ratting. I peared into the first pig house and flicked on the lamp. A rat stared back at me from a ledge on the back wall, i took aim and squeezed the trigger.... nothing. "Damn. I havn't cocked the rifle!!!" I pulled back on the cocking bolt and flicked on the lamp again... the rat was still there! I took aim again and squeezed the trigger... the rifle fired, but there was no impact??? "Ah, it might help if i put a magazine in!" I fumbled about in my pocket, fetched out the mag and in the darkness clumsily loaded it into the rifle. I figured the rat would be long gone, but i decided to check anyway. For the third time I switched on the lamp.... THE RAT WAS STILL THERE! Along with a couple of mates!!! Seems i'de drawn an audience. I took aim once more and squeezed the trigger, this time resulting in one rat slumping dead off the ledge and sending the others running. That was my account opened for 2011. I spent a couple of hours there. Managed to get 9, but only retrieved 7 for the tally. Some good sized ones too.
