In my humble opinion (& it is only an opinion) .17 are a load of old boll.....s

Meat damage is horendous on rabbits, gets blown off course by a loud **** and makes so much noise they are just a waste of time, ammo can also be difficult in some areas.

You CANNOT go wrong with a simple .22 LR, you will probably use subsonic most of the time with a moderator, used with hollowpoints would still stop a fox at 100yds (yes I know it's not "legal" but the foxes don't know the difference, they don't know which country they are in), believe it or not subsonic .22 rimfire is more effective in stopping a fox than a Hyper velocity one at ranges up to 100yds, you still need to shoot rabbits in the head to use all the meat though or use round nosed standard LR. It would not be the right thing to shoot a fox at over 100yds with a rimfire although some people use a shotgun & I think that's worse personally.

You can use a good semi-auto for .22 even with subsonic, even better for a beginner but you do have to do your homework first as some autos dont like to cycle subsonic rounds, & even then some prefer certain rounds. Mine is an Austrian semi-auto rifle made by Voere and is as happy as a sandboy shooting CCI subsonic.

In the UK you should still use a .22 centerfire calibre eg. .223 or 22/250 for foxes, get a .243 and it is very versitile, you can shoot Muntjac & Roe Deer & Foxes, even Gippos camping on the landowers back garden. The police won't nick you just pat you on the back for a job well done.

p.s. just joking...... about the foxes....
