Harnser
The pigeon shooting in my parish has been just about useless . The birds are not on the rape at the moment and are feeding elseware . Dont get to despondent if the birds are few and far between . Your farmer should soon be top dressing the rape with nitrogen for the second time on this years crop . Once top dressed the rape will get a growth spurt and produce nice tender shoots that the pigeons will come back for . So watch out for the top dressing and about a week later the birds should start to return . Harnser .
Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
Its going to be diffcult to judge when top dressing is applied in your area as I have seen a huge diffrents in GAI of OSR crop this year which will affect the timming of top dressings. Cheers OTH

Pigeons on & off the rape round here plenty of fields to chose from, some large acreages, seen a good few that have been top dressed allready. Still alot of maize stubble available due to ground being so wet
TomV
how can you tell when it has been top dressed?
alastair0903
should be able to see the tractor tyre marks in the tram lines , i would give it 10 days for the fert to have any effect unless soil temps rise drasticaly
TomV
last year when I was speaking to the farmer he was taking about putting tillage on it, is this similar?
alastair0903
yep topdressing is just the name given to a split application of fertiliser or till . i would think this will be the first application of fertiliser for the year to get the crop growing again as soon as the soil warms up . proTOM1
Alot of my rape has been top dressed already for the second time but not to many birds on the rape now mainly on cover crops and sugar beet which is bringing in all sorts saw over 1000 geese on some this evening . All this beet has been disced in due to going bad and 1 of my farmers has lost over £200,000 most have lost over £50.000 which is not good and this also means the price of sugar will go up as 75% of the beet in our county is still in the grownd
