Alpha Mule
Mine 'very strongly suggested' that I go for a 22-250 for fox, but nothing less than a 22cf would be tollerated.
pigeon street
Minimum calibre if you want to shoot all species of Deer is .243. If you just have Muntjac or Chinese Water Deer then a .22 centrefire making 1000ft-lbs of muzzle energy with a 50gr+ bullet is acceptable. Generally that means no less than .222. With you asking these simple questions I would take a step back from the Deer for now. Ask for a lesser .22cf for Foxes as the .22-250 will make it look like you're pushing your luck. A .223 will do all you ask of it and is also Munjac/CWD legal. Regarding the point above about the police getting funny about asking for a one for one from FAC air to .270, that's not accurate. I did a one for one from a moderator slot to a large bore rifle before. It's all about numbers of slots on the ticket. What the slot is means nothing. I am a newbe to this and as you say Will be stepping back from deer as i know i am not ready for that yet and it may be a while before a am. I am not sure how this all works with FAC on adding new rifles or have a variation for an old one and wanted to find out the best way of going about it, so in the future it could be easyer for me to add or change to a lager cal for deer. apache
I'm not sure where this fac air 1for1 to larger calibre comes from. Im pretty sure your licensing department will raise an eyebrow when you ask to go from an airgun to a .270 I am a newbe to this and as you say Will be stepping back from deer as i know i am not ready for that yet and it may be a while before a am. I am not sure how this all works with FAC on adding new rifles or have a variation for an old one and wanted to find out the best way of going about it, so in the future it could be easyer for me to add or change to a lager cal for deer. Each line on the FAC is a 'slot'. Say you applied for FAC Air Moderator .22RF Moderator .17HMR Moderator You have 6 'slots'. If you want to increase the number of slots you have to pay £26 for a variation. If you do a 1for1 variation there is no fee. You can do a free 1for1 and trade in a moderator and put in for a gun. You only pay if you want more slots. You WILL apply for a variation, and by applying for something easy to get [FAC air] you can trade it in for free. I really wish someone had told me this when I put in for my last variation as next time it will cost me £26! I'm trying to save you money. Just don't say that's why your applying for that! pat g
As has been said in the other posts. put down a 22lr and an Hmr. They are two completely different tools and they both have a place. The 22lr is imo still one of the best tools in the bag with the Hmr absolutely brilliant for anything where the range is too extreme for the 22lr. The 22/250 is again imo the best foxig calibre available, however because you would like to do some deer stalking that would rule the 22/250 out so the obvious choice would be a 243. Perfect for fox and also fits the bill for your stalking. Hope thi shelps ATB Pat
