new to the flock
1) when making a purse net how big of a net area do you start with? Example 4' x 4', 4'x6', etc.? 2)when running the cord do you just feed it through the first ring, then go half way around the net weaving through the outer set of holes , then through 2nd ring, through the holes up the other side of net and back through the first ring? 3) How much extra rope on the net when you stretch it out staight for the peg? Example one extra length of the net, 4 feet, etc. ? NTTF
Ferret Master
Hi, Are you taking up ferreting NTTF? I thought a while ago you mentioned it was banned in Canada because it is too efective? FM
new to the flock
You are correct, it is banned in Ontario .....but that does not mean that I cant travel somewhere else to play . I would like to try making a few just to see how it is done and so that I can contribute to my ferreting host this October. NTTF

old rooster
Thanks Ferret Master, However I am not looking to knit them, I will be using sheet netting. Thanks again, NTTF You'll make a much nicer net by doing them yourself NTTF, that way you can taper the nets both ends which makes them lighter, more compact and uses less material to make. Also seem to purse up that bit better. Let me know if you'd like a kit of bits made up and sent out to you. You'd need: end rings (I prefer decent chrome plated ones) a needle (or bobbin) a mesh (I use a highly polished plastic one and could soon make you a copy) some reels of decent hemp (I always buy in bulk and would happily pass the discount on to you). I could make a video of how I do them if it was any help as well. If you are into fly tying you should handle net making easily enough. old rooster
OldRooster: I have everthign on your list except a net needle....cant find any of the ones I use to own, and a video. The video would be vry useful. Thanks Mate Dan Needles can often be got from boat chandlers if in a fishing area. I can get you these if you have a problem and send out by post. Here is a great little picture sequence that is easy to follow: http://www.nfws.net/nets.htm My personal preference is for tapering nets, which you can't do by using chunks from a pre made bigger piece. The benefits are: lighter weight, more compact, quicker to make, uses less hemp. Start using the method shown but caat on just 10 starts, do the first row as normal then for the next eight rows increase by 1 mesh each time. To create the extra one just take the hemp twice around your mesh at one end or the other. Now decrease by 1 mesh for another eight rows, finishing with your tying off row at 10 wide. May sound tricky but it really does work well !!! Edited March 12, 2006 by old rooster
