otherwayup
Hi, I picked our Springer puppy up on Saturday afternoon and after a bit of compromising, we all agreed on 'Jack' as his name. Great. Until this afternoon when I realised that Jack sounds like Back. Doh! Even if I use 'Get Out' myself, I guess whilst out on a shoot/trial other people will be using 'Back' with their dogs and so he may get confused/mis-hear it as Jack. This is my first dog, let along gundog so; - Have I got nothing to worry about with possible confusion from people calling Back or should we consider changing now? It took long enough to agree on Jack, but if it has to be, it has to be. Thanks.
pegleg31
don't worry about names and commands as you teach your dog to listen to you and the commands you teach it.one way you can get around him getting confused is by adding his name before any commands and don't release him unless his name has been used. pigeonstool
A two syllable name is preferable - like single syllable words for commands ... vis > Jack-y ! back ! == raise pitch of voice for the second syllable of name .. and DONT SHOUT - dogs are not deaf - make it listen and LOOK at YOU for commands .......... darren m
my labs name was jack and i would always used "go back " putting the "go" in front made it a total different command. for my springers i use "get out" for one and "back" for the other
UKPoacher
As above use a high pitch for "Jack" and a low pitch for "Back" or use "Go Back". I used to work police dogs that were conditioned to search for people or discarded property using different commands. For the person search we used a loud warning speech hich went along the lines of "Police officer with a dog. Come on out or I'll release the dog. This is your last chance..........." The dog would break from a sit position on the "Find him" command after the warning had been given. I could get my dog to find hidden people using anything from Shakespeare's "A horse a horse my kingdom for a horse...." To "Polizi mit un grossen hundt. Commen zi out or un grossen hundt vill bitten you on ze " It was the pitch not the words that mattered.
