Additives in dog food?

Recommended Posts

Follwing on from my other post about Farmers markets in "Off Topic", Mrs H & I were talking to a guy selling doggy treats. Turns out he's going to be supporting a new dog food coming on to the market which, although a dry mix, just needs water added to it.

Mrs H told him we feed our dog James Wellbeloved with a small pouch of wet food. He said to us we should look online for something called "Dog food report" or "Pet food report" and that we may find it alarming/shocking. After a bit of coaxing, he eventually spilled the beans. He told us that most manufacturers add creosote to dog food for colouring, etc as well as other nasties used as fillers, etc. He said of some substance in dog food which made Labs fat as their bodies couldn't process or get rid of whatever was in their food. There's me thinking it was just folk feeding them all & sundry and not exercising them enough.

Cutting a long story short, we thanked him and headed off with our wares. LAterthat evening we fired up the laptop and set about searching for this report he was banging on about. Suffice to say I couldn't find anything relating to it or what he was on about. Even searching Creosote & James Wellbeloved i nthe same sentence brought up nothing.

I was interested to know if anyone else has heard of this? Personally, I think it's just what I thought it was initially, which was a load of hot air so he could plug this new dog food he was going to be selling.

I think most foods for human and dog consumption probably have a lot of filler in it. Just look at the colour of some dog food like bakers thats all additive. Whether its good or not is up for debate but I must say after changing to an organic dog food my do seems a lot more active.

Count your self lucky that you dont own a german sheperd,he cant have 'james well beloved' amongst others as its got to much colouring/additives etc, that he has to be fed on 'hills id',not cheap but we now have a healthy, fit and well behaved sheperd, the vet told us that the best thing to feed him is rabbits :hmm:

You would never believe some of the rubbish that goes into some dog foods,it is known that in some of the brands, chicken beaks, feet and feathers count as the protein.I have also heard tales of euthanised pets from the vets being used and some one finding a part of a dog collar in the tin of dog meat.

Hi

Try and google this 11 things you must do to keep your dog fit and healthy.

I know it is American but interesting reading.I used to feed my terriers on Bakers but have now changed to Burns. Its twice the price but what the hell. After 1 month I see a change in them and in particular they dont eat thier own poo any more as far as i can see.I also feed them twice a day instead of once.

I guess at the end of the day we have to what we think is best and feed what we can afford.

ATB
