zipdog
Which of these scopes is the best for a 17 hmr, the hawke Hawke Eclipse 30 Side Focus 6-24x50 SF at £180, the bushnell Banner 6-24x40 at £180 or the Simmons Master Series ProHunter 6-24x44mm SF at £200. Which one of these scopes holds its zero the best, has the best quality glass and is best for shooting at night and reasons why. Other suggestions are welcome but dont really want to push my budget much past £200. Many thanks Will

dadioles
I think your choice of magnification is very sensible. Some would say 24x is too much but for head shots on rabbits at 100 yards or so or even shooting targets that would be my choice. I have the Hawke on my .22LR and I am pretty happy with it. Looking towards the sun at dusk, particularly if rabbits are in the shade, is tough on any scope and things get slightly "milky", even on my Nikon. If you are lamping at night maybe 24x is a bit too much as distances are deceptive and I would expect you to be shooting at more like 50 yards than 100 yards. Everything is compromise. There is probably not much to choose between the scopes. Do they all have side focus? Side focus is essential - don't get one with "end" focus, you need long arms and will adjust it a lot. I don't, I think it is daft, but that's why we have forums and a multitude of opinions! Scope magnification is very personal , I can head shoot bunnies at 6x with no problem at all at 100 yards, very few of my scopes, even on the centrefires get turned up more than 6x out to 200 yards. Dekers
If your choice is set in stone and it WILL be one of the above, then get a side focus, and as I believe the Simmons are all cheap 'orrible Chinese made now, not the original excellent Philippines (I may be wrong) then the choice is simple. Hawke! ATB!
