sapper063
hi, the landlord of a local pub has doves and the last couple of weeks these have been attacked and killed by another bird,he thinks it is a sparrow hawk or similar, any ideas of how to stop it happening again.sensible repies please
crosshair
Sadly this happens all the time, I had a couple of dozen doves wiped out by a female Sparrow Hawk. The RSPB make a lot of claims about the disappearence of our songbirds, one of the biggest culprits is our protected hawks, and they will protect them regardless of the damage they do. Sparrow Hawks regard bird feeding tables as a quick takeaway.

Greenhunter
I thought of the owl decoy but didn't suggest it as they are also used to keep pigeons off places Bit of a clash of interests if you get my meaning GH
ayrshiretaxidermy
Im afraid you cant stop mother nature. If he doesnt want his doves killed by spars, hes gonna have to keep them in or not keep them at all. Plastic decoys wont work, CD`s have a limited effect. dougall
The owl decoy will sure keep the doves off! Pigeons and Doves are very aware of Sparrowhawks..their main predator, unfortunately once the S/H knows where they can get a meal they will return.Unless the doves are daft/tame the brighter ones will survive. 90% it is a sparrowhawk, they do hate humans a scarecrow will work better than a decoy.if its a peregrine build a dove cote and quick!
