sitsinhedges
I think 5s are generally too big for pigeon because they leave too many holes in the pattern at range unless you have tight chokes but are good in a moderated gun because they have tight chokes as a matter of course with the heavier pellet making up for lower velocity but again not a long range option. I think 6s 6 1/2 and 7s are the ideal with the smaller shot in the lighter loads to keep pattern density. I have a tub of 32g 7s ready for decoying, probably with skeet barrels, when the harvest begins. I have used them for roost shooting and they kill well at range too but I prefer 6s for those longer shots now. I have also used 7 1/2s aswell but the larger shot give confidence as long as the pattern is still there, IMO.
MC
@MC is that a "trap comander wad?" how are they? they are a cheap economy wad. but they seem to be used in lots of cartridges. do they load ok or are they a pain? they are in intercomp hv shells, one of my all time favourite shell. @OP just buy pigeon cartridges for pigeon. if you need more performance or a cheaper shell, make or buy other shells. i still say, an ounce of #5s is a great pigeon load. its a small bird, that has huge flight muscles. at decoy ranges, and some not so decoy ranges, the 5 will outshine the 6. and bigger the pattern thins. handloading is like organic shells, what you put in comes out. Cookoff13, I have no idea what wad that is, I did not load that cartridge. It was actually loaded by Express so I am guessing that it is probably a Vagner wad of some description. The cartridge was in a box of odds and ends I was given by someone who had given up shooting. It is an Express Special Game in a shotsize 11, 24 grams

the crowman
ote name='wymberley' timestamp='1301320886' post='1371913'] Hi, Agree, particularly with the final phrase which reflects why your comments in the pinned section of this sub-forum also make sense. If TJ stopped confusing everyone by calling 7 shot 71/2, he'd also make sense. There's nowt wrong with 7s for decoying as the well known Major knew and the other species that he mentions at sensible ranges. The bottom line is is that 71/2s are not 7s. Cheers
