BASC membership discount for HM Forces

I must point out that some of my best pals are in the army and they love the life. However, it was and is their choice to join and stay in, no one twists their arm to force them do so.

If they would rather be at home with an "armoury" as you put it and be out every weekend shooting there is an easy answer....get another job but they won't of course because they love the life and job they have chosen.

That doesn't sound right! What you promoted to fella?

Promoted to Staff Sergeant Mate but due to the amazing pay system I was a high pay band Sergeant and im now a lower band staffy so cant get a pay rise for years until the two equal out! Its a **** system but at least I got it!

Also were on a 2 year pay freeze as civil servants so no rise there either!

The Range Rover is just going to have to wait

Well done BASC :good:

For those who are winging above get a grip our forces often put their lives on the line doing a job that many wouldn't want to do. Yes they earn a good wage but when you look at the risks and separation from their families etc its a deserved one.

Last time I checked Farmers were on a fairly decent wage too :hmm:

Well seaid that man i agree with you sir as a member of our armed forces

and those winging how about if you want that tenner of basc sign up fellas and get yourself to afghan its a very naughty place

The Armoury comment was taken from Canis's signature. I don't doubt their choice to stay in fair play to them. I fully back the £10 Discount that brings the Armed forces discount that BASC now offer to the same level as a Student who pays little or no Tax. That is my point here.

I'm in the forces myself and I'm not debating leaving the forces however it is nice to see BASC or any other companies etc offering discounts to serving members of the forces. What grips my **** is people slagging off the forces and Police forces. I offer the same argument to you if you dont like it you know what to do.. Join up!

I'm sure for the sake of £10 you would rather return to your family every day and not risk losing limbs / life. :hmm:

I posted this as a good news thread, thinking it would be fairly uncontroversial. I never imagined for a second that so many people would whinge and begrudge our forces a tenner discount, jeez a sad day

It is a fantastic news thread Blunderbuss :good:

Sadly it just shows how distanced the public are from our armed forces nowadays. I know Afghanistan and ongoing military commitments worldwide are unpopular with the public but do you honestly think we want to be out there?! I'm sure the thread would be different if talking about discount for those who served during WWI / WWII :hmm:

OMG what a bunch of @ssholes, if the military is so good for discounts, join or shut the **** up!

If your to old, to fat, more likely to ******* lazy or scared to join, leave the lads and lasses that have made that career choice alone.

You made the wrong career choice deal with it, its your fault not theirs!

Don't get me wrong, I fully support our armed forces and I am very proud of what they do.

But sorry BASC you have made a big mistake here and the others who in this forum agree with the discounted fee structure should think it through a bit more, it is neither fair nor logical.

Offering a discount to people in the services based on a knee jerk emotive reaction to the tragic deaths of and injuries to our troops while serving our country is not the way to go.

For a start... It applies to all ranks irrespective of pay, position or location.

How do you feel about the very highly paid deskbound administrator, a member of HM Armed Forces, in Whitehall, receiving a BASC discount?

Most people in the forces, army, navy, air force, are never in any danger and do not go anywhere near the "front line" so why should they get a discount?

There are plenty of other people who, every day, carry out life saving actions for little financial reward and are affected deeply by their work and may be emotionally scarred as the result. Try working in the NHS with sick and dying patients day in day out, herioc, traumatic, exhausting. That can screw your mind up!

A much better approach is to sponsor activities targeted directly at forces personnel (and their families) who have been affected by their time serving this country. This could be co-ordinated by people such as Help for Heroes, Armed Forces Childrens Trust and the many other charities that do a wonderful job.

I would be delighted to see part of my BASC membership fee used for such good purposes and I expect that, if asked, most people in this forum would be happy to give up some of their time to help out with such activities. I do not, however, want to subsidise the membership of General X who shoots grouse on his Scottish estate, he can afford it.

With respect the VAST majority of serving members of the armed forces are not the higher ranks you refer too.

From just over 100,000 members the army has around 70 generals 50 major-generals, 20 lieutenant-generals.

Within the rank and file of BASC membership who are in the Senior Citizen category, or the Clubs and Syndicate category, all of who get the same £10 discount off full price membership, I am confident that there are those who enjoy the same level of higher incomes than generals in the Army.

And when we run our appeals (which again some will criticize us for doing!) it tends to be those on higher salaries that send in the larger donations.

As to your point about Help for Heroes, a colleague of mine is talking to them as I type about a fundraising project.

As I have said before we can’t please all the people all the time – wish that we could!

David
