Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Dear all, well just got back yesterday and finished cutting up the slain. Freezer well stocked. Day 1. Sunday. Arrived at the stalking ground for 2pm and after a quick cup of tea of i go to stalk the forest trails. I am slowly tip toeing round when i spy an orange rump sticking out of the undergrowth. Its a little early for the roe to be in summer coat i thought as i realised it was either the smallest roe in history or fox. As i brought the rifle onto the sticks and placed the crosshairs on...... a fox lifted its head up and stood looking at me. Good grief the temptation. But there might be a deer on the next fell so off on his way goes a very lucky charlie. I stalked all of the trails in that area and settled down to await the twilight events on a cleared fell. I decided to pick my spot on top of a shooting mound some 130yds from the forestry fringe that i have seen many deer run into if the approach isnt stealthy enough so fingers crossed. Alas after some time and as twilight turned to dusk and finish time no deer had showed though just as i decided to pack up and head back to the caravan i heard a deer call a long way out on the fell. hindsight is a wonderful thing i should have gone half way down the fell and perhaps i would have seen it D'oh!! Day2. Monday. Going to be a full days stalking today as well as fitting in my skills test for the forestry people at mid day. Up with the lark and out we go. i had stalked an area without seeing any deer so decided to move onto our other lease. I affectionately call one area "my lucky fell" as i have both seen and shot alot of deer here. It didn't let me down. Half way down the first block of foresty i spied a roe some 200yds away. The bins reveal a button buck and the first deer i have seen this trip. I have some broken ground to use as cover and a raised mound 100yds away if i can get to it that will put me in the 100yds bracket from the deer. i left the sticks where i am now crawling from and i hadnt gone far when i remembered a draninage ditch in front ..........o oh!! as i reached it and put my hand in first which went down to my wrist..... nothing for it in we go..... out the other side with the whole lower part of me soaked and 50yds to go. i squelched my final approach to see the deer moved on slightly but 130yds away and standing broadside on...... better be quick he aint sure whats up but alarm bells are ringing. Nothing fancy and a good heart and lung shot knocks him over. The gralloch reveals a healthy youngster that will make fine eating. time is pressing now so off i go to meet the rangers for my skills test. shooting test passed with flying colours and all questions answered sees me re-qualifed.... woo hoo!! Evening stalk now where to go, the wind has changed slightly which rules out a large chunk of land i might otherwise have tried. Hmmmm my lucky fell has a wild side not stalked by many except me as it is tricky to get to without making lot of noise. The more i think about it, indeed thats where we are going this evening. i am heading to an area with a raised mound that makes an ideal ambush point and it was here that last year i saw a cracking buck across our boundary. I saw no deer as i made my final approach and settled to await twilight. Only been there 20 minutes when a movement to my right caught my eye. The bins revealed a cracking buck heading my way but 300yds away. I shuffle the rifle and myself into position and hope he comes a little closer. There is no cover in front of me so i cant move but he is still coming my way and i place the crosshairs on in readiness. 160yds and he peels left in front of me. farther than i would have liked but well in range. He stands briefly which is my chance.... My shot arrives inch perfect in his heart/lung area and he takes a few steps and falls over. Bloody hell...... the ol' adrenalins thumping now!! The gralloch reveals a healthy mature buck, my best to date. Day3. Tuesday. It has poured down all night. I decided to try the area i tried on sunday. The wind is howling and rain beginning again. As i make my way along i take particular care to check the leeward side of any raised areas as these usually hold deer getting out of the wind. Well i peeped one eye round a corner and it was like a roe bomb had gone off as deer scattered everywhere...... a buck clattered into the forestry with such force he left some fur in the branches.... 2 does took off across the fell as if the hounds of hell were after em whilst one slowly turned to look my way. I had a feeling what would be looking back at me as the crosshairs found their mark....... yep a pregnant doe was blinking in the rain at me...... as she waddled off i couldn't help imagining what was going through her mind...... you pack of rotten **** running off and leaving me like that you know i can't run in my condition!!....... HA HA. i watched her as she made her way into the forestry and as the rain turned to sheets of water falling from the sky i decided to head for the caravan and then home. An excellent trip!! 2 bucks and passed my skills test WOO HOO!

FOXHUNTER1
Nice buck I would still personally have shot the fox though , never look a gift horse in the mouth . Contrary to what many believe it wouldnt of affected your stalking , I have quite a few times shot a fox then round the next corner shot a buck....
