JustJon
Hi all, Currently taking clay lessons and have applied for SGC. Have a little land I can shoot over (hopefully) and want to know what I can use the shotgun for? Complete noob question I know. pigeons and crows in the field? Rabbits down the path? (private path) Squirrels in small collide (full of greys) Clay shooting (obviously a yes...) Assuming I'm 50 yards from roads/public paths/houses and shooting in a safe direction. Thanks - help a muppet out. If anyone in the area (bucks) wants a muppet 'student' then let me know - dinner after would be on me! Lol
sitsinhedges
You can basically shoot wherever you want as long as it is safe and the shot do not leave your boundaries. You can shoot right next to a road as long as you do not cause alarm or distress to road users but it is best to observe the 50ft from centre of highway rule to keep on the safe side. The 50ft rule does not apply to footpaths.
JustJon
Cool, thanks. Squirrels, is a shotgun safe firing at a tree? No danger of richoche (sp?) or similar?
Redgum
Just the wait for you now, can seem like ages but worth it. I have shot loads of squirrels in trees with my twelve and never had a shot come back at me.
cockercas
Just use a bit of commonsense mate. Yes its safe to shoot into trees and yes to shooting on the path. You can shoot on a public right of way (providing you have permission from who ever owns the land it runs thru) but obviously if somones walking ther dog you don't want to be rattling shots of in front of them. I'd take you under my wing but I live in E yorkshire
JustJon
Thanks Gents, Appreciate the feedback. Cocker, thanks. The path is a private one and wouldn't shootvwhen too many of the farm team or contractors are about. Good to know about public footpaths though, that was new to me. Thought it was the same as a highway. Many many thanks.
HDAV
Best read and digest the BASC guides crop protection is one thing ( general licence ) however there are rules and seasons for game etc Edited April 7, 2011 by HDAV
JustJon
Thanks HDAV, I've seen the general license - meaning crows and wood pigeons can be shot as long as crop damage is occurring and other methods have been tried. I know the law saying rabbits should be culled by all land owners. Which law covers grey squirrel shooting in England? (might not have full technical explanations above, I'm glossing over details, it's late) Thanks guys - appreciate all the help.
HDAV
I think but check grey squirrel are classed as vermin like rats and rabbits. As they are none native i think they can be culled anywhere safe.
