Dire day on rape

Recommended Posts

I met up with Catamong nice & early this morning on a vast acerage of rape that he had permission to shoot.

He'd been watching the fields for the past week, and good numbers were about. He showed me where to set up, in the general direction of one of the flight lines in to the field. He was shooting with a fellow member about half a mile away, with the idea that we would bounce the birds between our positions.

I was set up at 8am with a U shaped pattern head in to a nice wind coming from left to right. Rotary at the head just to the left of the deeks.

All looked set for a good days sport.

After about an hour of not seeing a single bird, I went out in to the pattern to adjust the speed of the rotary. And on my return to the hide I saw the reason for the lack of birds. Right behind the hedge I was set up in, was about 40 people with metal detectors strolling about in the field. :)

So I called Catamong & he suggested moving to another site nearer to where they were shooting, so I packed up & moved on. He hadn't shot much either & was amazed at the lack of birds.

I was re set up at about 10.45 with the others in sight further up the field, but there was a distinct lack off birds. After about another hour I was having a coffee and thinking about packing up, when I heard a whoosh of wings directly overhead,

there was a flock of about 25 birds steaming into the deeks, I franticly reached for the gun and pulled off a lovely right & left. :D

About 10 mins later we both decide to pack up.

What was so frustrating was the conditions were great, a good wind, overcast skies, but no birds.

Oh well I still enjoyed the day and shot my first pigeon with the new semi auto, & at least my average cartridge ratio is on the increase 2 carts for 2 birds.

The others ended up with just 9 birds. :*)

Sorry to hear you had a **** day bud but think if the money you save d on carts

Did the Metal detectors have permission or were they trespassing? :<

I am STILL waiting to hear about a poss shoot just past morpeth but it's been a week now :D

I don't wanna ring as it would seem pushy perhaps and a bit desperate :)

Hope you get a better days sport in the week ahead

Aint a Farmer :D

My Aunts Ex husbands mate (with me so far  ) phew that was a mouth full :/

Anyway HE is a head warden or some such thing at a fishery near Mortpeth in an old quarry and She asked HIM if HE could sort out a shoot on the land as there is an extensive bit of it seemingly and not much covered by water :)

So i am waiting for HIM to ring HER back and then SHE will ring ME and let me know.

OK now I am confused

Hope you get what i mean :D:D:D

It was a pity about the lack of birds today, I can't explain why, as there were plenty about yesterday, and I don't believe anybody locally has done any drilling, which would certainly draw them off.

Still, that's the way it goes sometimes, perhaps the sudden change in the weather has made the birds think more about making squabs than feeding..!!

PW Forum Newbie dcradds shared the hide with me, and he took out a couple of lovely birds with his B325 that came right into the pattern, just a pity there weren't more about..!!
