WoodyPopper
Theres been a few posts about using Google maps to help you map out pigeon flight lines. But I only found out the other day that you can draw lines on the maps and Google tells you the distance. I've used it to identify places where I want to shoot and the distances to roads, paths etc. It's useful to know for sure that such and such a building or whatever is out of shot gun range (300 yards +). You need to have a Google account. Then you can sign in and create a "My map". When you edit the map, the line tool and some other tools are available. Hope that'#s not old news for everyone. rtaylor
http://magic.defra.gov.uk/website/magic/ This is the other good one to use. You can find out the size of a field, distances etc. very accurate. It might take a while to load up though. It also gives the names of quite a lot of woods, areas etc. And SSSI's Ramsar Sites etc. Edited April 24, 2011 by rtaylor

Albion
Also try Wikimapia. Has lots of tools, and information about places on it (may not be 100% correct!)
